Mariner 8 Sailmate Troubleshooting
Engine is not starting or hard starting |
Empty gas tank - Add gasoline.
Low-quality gasoline - Change fuel.
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system.
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace or clean fuel filter.
Carburetor is not adjusted - Check carburetor float adjustment.
Dirty fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Closed or clogged fuel tank air vent - Open or clean air vent.
Lack of fuel pump pressure - Install new pump or repair it.
Engine starts but then shuts off |
Spark plug is faulty - Replace spark plug.
Carburetor is clogged or defective - Service or change carburetor.
Ignition coil is not working - Replace ignition coil as necessary.
Closed or restricted fuel tank air vent - Fuel tank air vent need to be opened or cleaned.
Fuel pump pressure is low - Replace or rebuild fuel pump.
Faulty thermal relief valve - Install new relief valve.

Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Carburetor is not working properly - Inspect and adjust.
Fuel lines clogging - Clean fuel lines.
Fuel tank air vent closed or restricted - Open or service air vent.
Fuel filter is clogged - Install new filter.
Gaskets are damaged - Install new gaskets.
Engine overheated |
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Too lean fuel mixture in carburetor - Set the carburetor properly.
Ignition timing is incorrect - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Faulty thermostat - Change thermostat as required.
Water pump malfunction - Water pump need to be replaced.
Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise |
Low octane gasoline - Use proper fuel.
Engine overload - Load reducing required.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjust idling as required.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Main bearings or crankshaft are worn out - Repair or replace defective parts.
Worn cylinder bore or piston rings - Change defective components.

Dirty or improperly adjusted carburetor - Adjust carburetor properly or service it.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Ignition system is defective - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Damaged gaskets - Change gaskets.
Powerhead components are faulty - Defective components need to be replaced.
Engine uses too much fuel |
Incorrect adjustment of carburetor main jet - Adjust the carburetor main jet correctly.
Defective or loose spark plug - Tighten or change the spark plug.
Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Replace defective parts.
Trim motor runs but system does not move |
Lack of oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Pump assembly is defective - Check pump and replace if necessary.
Leakage of manual drain valve - Close the valve fully or replace it.
Broken motor or pump driveshaft - Change defective component.
Trim cannot be fully up or down |
Pump assembly is faulty - Change pump.
Tilt ram piston ball is in wrong position - Service or repair.
Tilt ram piston O-ring is worn - Replace O-ring.
Lack of oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Lower check valve is not properly secured in port side trim ram - Install valve correctly.
