Mercury 15 ELPT Troubleshooting
Engine hard starting or not starting |
No fuel in fuel tank - Add gasoline.
Low-quality gasoline - Use quality gasoline.
Dirty fuel lines - Inspect and clean.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is faulty - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Clogged fuel filter - Change fuel filter.
Dirty fuel lines - Clean fuel system lines.
Drained or defective battery - Recharge or replace battery.
Damaged electrical wire harness - Inspect harness connections.
Ignition system failure - Check ignition components and replace if necessary.
Pulse fuel pump is faulty - Change pulse fuel pump.
Electric fuel pump is faulty - Electric fuel pump need to be replaced.
ECM failure - Install new ECM.
Engine stalls after starting |
Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug.
Faulty ignition coil - Replace ignition coil as necessary.
Faulty pulse fuel pump - Replace pulse fuel pump.
Fuel system clogging - Clean fuel system.
Final fuel filter is dirty - Replace fuel filter.
Defective electric fuel pump - Change electric fuel pump as required.
Engine runs irregularly |
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Check fuel pump and change if required.
Fuel lines clogging - Fuel lines must be clean.
Fuel filter is plugged - Install new filter.
Engine keeps overheating |
Excessive engine load - Reduce engine load.
Improper ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Thermostat is defective - Thermostat need to be replaced.
Water pump failure - Change water pump.
Engine knocking or noise |
Low octane fuel - Use proper fuel.
Excessive engine load - Load reducing required.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjustment required.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Service or change fuel pump.
Main bearings or crankshaft are worn out - Have bearings or crankshaft replaced.
Piston rings or cylinder bore are worn - Change faulty parts.
Loss of engine power |
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Powerhead components are worn - Replace defective components as required.
Stator, coil, or switch box defective - Change faulty components.
Bad compression - Normalize compression.
Fuel supply problem - Check fuel system.
Manifold fuel leak - Leak must be repaired.
Vapor separator flooding over - Check and correct malfunction.
Engine uses too much fuel |
Spark plug is faulty or loose - Spark plug need to be tightened or replaced.
Worn sleeve, piston, or rings - Change faulty components.
Engine overload - Load reducing required.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and change if required.
Trim motor runs but system does not move |
Lack of oil - Fill up oil to required level.
Damaged pump assembly - Inspect pump and change as required.
Leakage of manual release valve - Close the valve fully or replace it.
Faulty pump driveshaft or motor - Replace worn component.
Trim cannot be fully up or down |
Defective pump assembly - Replace pump.
Tilt ram piston ball is displaced - Service or repair.
Tilt ram piston O-ring is worn - Install new O-ring.
Not enough oil - Fill up oil.
Lower check valve not seating in port side trim ram - Install valve correctly.
