Mercury 40 ELPT Troubleshooting
Engine won't start or starts hard |
Fuel tank is empty - Fill fuel up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Change gasoline.
Dirty fuel system - Check and clean.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Replace spark plug.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Restricted fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Drained or defective battery - Recharge or change battery.
Damaged wiring harness connections - Check wiring harness connections.
Damaged ignition system - Replace defective components.
Defective pulse fuel pump - Install new pulse fuel pump.
Electric fuel pump is defective - Replace electric fuel pump.
ECM failure - Replace ECM.
Engine starts but then stalls |
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Ignition coil is faulty - Install a new ignition coil.
Pulse fuel pump failure - Install new pulse fuel pump.
Fuel system is clogged - Service fuel system.
Final fuel filter is clogged - Change final filter.
Damaged electric fuel pump - Install new electric fuel pump.
Engine runs roughly |
Ignition system problems - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Engine keeps overheating |
Excessive engine load - Reduce the load.
Incorrect ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Defective thermostat - Change thermostat.
Water pump malfunction - Replace water pump.
Engine knocks or noises |
Low octane gasoline - Use proper fuel.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing is recommended.
Incorrect low idle setting - Adjust as required.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Crankshaft or main bearings wear - Worn parts replacement required.
Worn piston rings or cylinder bore - Change defective components.
Engine lacks power |
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Damaged powerhead parts - Change defective components.
Failed switch box, stator, or coil - Replace faulty parts.
Low compression - Correct.
Fuel supply problem - Check fuel system.
Manifold is leaking - Repair leaks.
Vapor separator is flooded - Normalize vapor separator functions.
Engine using too much gasoline |
Faulty or loose spark plug - Re-tighten or change the spark plug.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace faulty parts.
Engine overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Trim motor runs but system does not move |
Low oil level - Need to add the oil.
Pump assembly faulty - Check pump and change if required.
Manual release valve leaking - Close the valve fully or replace it.
Motor or pump driveshaft faulty - Change defective component.
Trim cannot be fully up or down |
Pump assembly is defective - Change pump.
Tilt ram piston ball is displaced - Clean or repair.
Worn tilt ram piston O-ring - Change O-ring.
Oil insufficient - Fill up oil to required level.
Lower check valve not seating in port side trim ram - Install valve correctly.
