Mercury 9.9 Sailpower Problems
Engine starts up hard or will not start |
Empty fuel tank - Fill gasoline up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use quality fuel.
Fuel system clogged - Repair or replace.
Defective wiring connection of spark plug - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Spark plug is damaged - Replace spark plug.
Fuel filter is dirty - Fuel filter needs changing.
Carburetor is not adjusted - Check carburetor float adjustment.
Clogged fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Closed or restricted fuel tank air vent - Open or service air vent.
Fuel pump pressure is low - Change or rebuild fuel pump.
Engine starts and stops immediately |
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Carburetor is clogged or faulty - Service or repair carburetor.
Defective ignition coil - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Fuel tank air vent clogged or closed - Fuel tank air vent need to be opened or cleaned.
Fuel pump pressure is low - Replace or rebuild fuel pump.
Thermal relief valve is faulty - Replace if necessary.
Engine runs irregularly |
Ignition failure - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Wrong carburetor adjustment - Adjusting carburetor correctly.
Fuel lines are dirty - Clean fuel system lines.
Closed or restricted fuel tank air vent - Open or clean air vent.
Fuel filter is dirty - Install new filter.
Gaskets are defective - Change gaskets.
Engine overheating |
Excessive engine load - Load reducing required.
Carburetor is running lean - Adjust carburetor properly.

Engine power loss |
Carburetor is improperly adjusted or dirty - Adjust the carburetor properly or clean it.
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Defective ignition - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Damaged gaskets - Install new gaskets.
Powerhead components are damaged - Replace defective components as required.
Engine uses too much fuel |
Carburetor main jet adjustment is incorrect - Adjust main jet as required.
Faulty or loose spark plug - Re-tighten or change the spark plug.
Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Change faulty parts.
Trim motor runs but system does not move |
Oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Pump assembly is damaged - Test pump and change if necessary.
Manual shut-off valve leaks - Close the valve fully or replace it.
Pump driveshaft or motor damaged - Change defective component.
Trim cannot be fully up or down |
Pump assembly is faulty - Replace pump.
Tilt ram piston ball is not positioned correctly - Service or repair.
Worn tilt ram piston O-ring - Change O-ring.
Insufficient oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Lower check valve is not properly secured in port side trim ram - Install valve correctly.
