Toyota 2ZZ-GE Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or hard to start

No gasoline in tank - Fill it up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use quality gasoline.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Ignition failure - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Fuel filter is plugged - Change fuel filter.
Clogged fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Clean or change fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts.

Engine runs roughly

Ignition failure - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Air filter is blocked - Change or service air filter.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance.
Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct idle settings.

Engine stalls after starting

Spark plug is damaged - Replace spark plug.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Ignition coil is damaged - Change ignition coil as required.
Loose or worn valve springs - Replace valve springs.
Valves sticking - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheated

Engine noise or knocking

Low octane fuel - Use proper fuel.
Engine overload - Load reducing is recommended.

Ignition timing is incorrect - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Valves are worn, stuck, or burned - Clean or replace valves.
Sleeve, piston, or rings are damaged - Replace faulty parts.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Weak cylinder compression - Inspect cylinder block and change worn parts.

Excessive engine oil consumption

Seals or gaskets are defective - To repair leaks, replace worn parts.
Valve guides or stems are damaged - Install new valves.
Stuck or defective piston rings - Have piston rings replaced.
Damaged piston or cylinder liner - Check piston and liner, change as required.

Engine backfires

Clogged fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and clean if necessary.

Improper ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Improper valve setting - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.
