BMW M20B20 Troubleshooting

Engine hard to start or doesn't start

No gasoline in tank - Fill it up.
Low-quality gasoline - Change fuel.
Dirty fuel lines - Inspect and clean.
Spark plug wiring connection is damaged - Check the spark plug wire connection, repair or replace.
Spark plug is defective - Replace spark plug.
Defective ignition system - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Fuel filter is clogged - Replace fuel filter.
Clogged fuel lines - Clean fuel system lines.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Carburetor malfunction - Check and repair as required.

Irregular engine running

Ignition system failure - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Air filter is dirty - Clean or replace.
Spark plug is defective - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Improper valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Engine starts and then shuts off

Engine is overheated

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Low octane fuel - Use correct gasoline.
Excessive engine load - Load reducing required.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Correct idle settings.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Clean or replace fuel pump.

Engine lacks power
