BMW M20B25 Troubleshooting

Engine doesn't start or difficult to start

No fuel in fuel tank - Fill fuel up.
Low-quality gasoline - Change fuel.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Defective wiring connection of spark plug - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Faulty spark plug - Change spark plug.
Defective ignition - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Dirty fuel filter - Fuel filter needs changing.
Dirty fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.

Engine runs intermittently

Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.

Engine starts and then shuts off

Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug as required.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and change if required.

Broken or loose valve springs - Change valve springs.
Valves sticking - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheating

Engine oil insufficient - Add oil to the engine crankcase.

Engine noises or knocks

Engine oil consumption is too high

Seals or gaskets are wearing excessively - Defective components must be replaced.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Valves must be replaced.
Stuck or defective piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.
Worn cylinder liner or piston - Inspect piston and liner, fit new components as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are clogged - Inspect fuel injectors and service as required.
Clogged fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Wrong ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
