Nissan A14 Troubleshooting

Engine won't start or difficult to start

No gasoline in tank - Add gasoline.
Improper fuel grade - Use correct fuel grade.
Fuel system clogged - Repair or replace.
Loose or disconnected spark plug wire - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Defective ignition - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Carburetor is not adjusted - Check carburetor float adjustment.
Bad engine compression - Inspect cylinder block and replace worn components.

Rough engine running

Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Air filter is dirty - Replace or clean filter.
Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Service or change fuel pump.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Bad ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct idle settings.

Engine starts and stops immediately

Defective spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or faulty carburetor - Service or repair carburetor.
Ignition coil is defective - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Valve springs are damaged or weak - New valve springs need to be installed.
Stuck valves - Service the valves.

Engine overheated

Insufficient engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing required.
Carburetor is running lean - Adjust carburetor properly.
Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Valve setting is incorrect - Adjust valves correctly.
Clogged radiator fins or leaking radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Not enough coolant - Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks.
Faulty thermostat - Thermostat need to be replaced.
Water pump is defective - Change water pump.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Stale gasoline - Use correct fuel.

Low engine oil level - Fill up the oil to required level.

Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Replace the head gasket.

Oil filter is blocked - Replace or service oil filter.

Engine using too much gasoline

Dirty air filter element - Clean or replace air filter.
Incorrect carburetor main jet adjustment - Adjust it properly.
Loose or faulty spark plug - Replace or tighten spark plug.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Worn, stuck, or burned valves - Service or replace valves.
Sleeve, piston, or rings are damaged - Change defective components.
Valve clearance is not correct - Check and adjust.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Engine oil consumption is too high

Gaskets or seals may be damaged - Replace defective parts.
Damaged valve stems or valve guides - Need to replace the valves.
Stuck or defective piston rings - Install new piston rings.
Scored cylinder liner or piston - Check liner and piston, change as required.

Engine backfires

Carburetor mixture is too lean - Adjust carburetor correctly.
