Suzuki DF15A Troubleshooting
The Suzuki DF15A is a 4-stroke 2-cylinder OHC (overhead cam) gasoline outboard engine with a rated power of 15 hp (11 kW) at 5000-6000 rpm. The engine cylinder bore is 2.38" (60.4 mm) and piston stroke is 2.24" (57 mm). A 20.1 cubic inches (327 cc) outboard motor has a multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection, integral fuel pump type, trochoid pump lubrication, starting system with electric or recoil starter, digital CDI ignition system, manual or power tilt, and tiller handle or remote control steering. The fuel tank capacity is 3.2 gal (12 liters). The propeller is made of aluminum and it has three blades.

| Engine difficult to start or won't start |
Empty fuel tank - Fill it up.
Wrong grade of gasoline - Use quality gasoline.
Dirty fuel system - Check and clean.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Defective spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Plugged fuel filter - Replace or clean fuel filter.
Worn or defective vapor separator needle valve - Replace needle valve.
Dirty fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Fuel tank air vent closed or restricted - Fuel tank air vent need to be opened or cleaned.
Fuel feed pump is faulty - Replace or rebuild fuel feed pump.
Damaged or incorrectly adjusted choke cable - Adjust correctly or change the cable.
Valve clearance is improper - Adjustment procedure required.
Incorrect valve timing - Adjust valve timing as required.
Fuel pressure is low - Check low pressure fuel pump or check system for fuel leaks.
Dirty or faulty fuel injector - Replace or clean if necessary.
Fuel regulator is not operating - Change fuel regulator.
ECM failure - Install new ECM.

Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug as required.
Vapor separator needle valve is bend or wear - Change vapor separator needle valve.
Ignition coil is faulty - Ignition coil must be replaced.
Fuel tank air vent closed or restricted - Open or service air vent.
Faulty fuel pump - Replace or rebuild fuel pump.
Faulty choke system - Inspect and replace choke system components.
Incorrect valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Incorrect valve timing - Adjust valve timing as required.
Weak or damaged valve springs - Install new valve springs.
Stuck valves - Clean the valves.
Poor cylinder compression - Check and repair damaged parts.
Fuel filter is clogged - Replace or clean fuel filter.
Clogged or worn fuel injector - Replace or clean if necessary.
Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil pump is defective - Change oil pump as required.
Water intake screen is dirty - Need to wash or clean.
Thermostat failure - Change thermostat.
Damaged water pump - Change water pump as required.

Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Clean or change fuel pump.
Worn or defective vapor separator needle valve - Install new needle valve.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Fuel tank air vent closed or restricted - Fuel tank air vent need to be opened or cleaned.
Plugged fuel filter - Install new filter.
Intake manifold air leaks - Install new gasket.
Dirty water intake screen - Need to clean or wash.
Throttle valve and throttle link are damaged or worn - Change faulty components.
Clogged or worn fuel injector - Clean or replace if necessary.

Engine is running overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Clogged fuel pump or fuel injector - Replace or clean if necessary.
Ignition timing is incorrect - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Thermostat is faulty - Thermostat need to be replaced.
Water pump failure - Change water pump.
Improper propeller diameter or pitch - Install correct propeller.
Damaged or bent propeller - Replace propeller.
Outboard motor is positioned too low or too high - Mount the motor as required.
Low engine oil level - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil pump failure - Replace oil pump.
Water intake is clogged - Clean and wash as required.
Wrong valve setting - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.

Stale fuel - Use proper fuel.
Engine is running overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Too low idle RPM - Correct idle adjustment.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Crankshaft or main bearings failure - Repair or replace defective parts.
Damaged piston rings or cylinder bore - Replace defective components.

Fuel lines are clogged - Service fuel lines.
Fuel injector is fault - Replace fuel injector.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Ignition system failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Cylinder head gasket is damaged - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Powerhead components are worn - Replace defective components as required.
Valves are burned or stuck - Clean or replace valves.
Improper propeller diameter or pitch - Install correct propeller.
Damaged or bent propeller - Have propeller repaired or replaced.
Outboard motor mounting height is set incorrectly - Have motor adjusted to proper transom height.
Improper trim angle - Adjust trim angle.
| Engine uses too much fuel |
Fuel injector is dirty or worn - Clean or replace as required.
Spark plug is loose or faulty - Spark plug need to be tightened or replaced.
Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Replace faulty parts as required.
ECU is not functioning - Install new ECU.
| Excessive motor vibration |
Damaged or bent propeller - Have propeller repaired or replaced.
Propeller shaft damaged - Replace propeller shaft.
Weeds wraped around propeller - Remove and clean propeller.
Engine mounting bolt is not tightened - Tighten the bolt as required.
Loose or faulty steering pivot Tighten or replace.
| Starter is not cranking |
Low battery power - Recharge the battery.
Battery is draining quickly - Service battery or change it.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Connect wires properly or change terminals.
Defective starter motor - Change or repair starter.
| Trim motor is running but trim system cannot move up or down |
Insufficient oil - Check and refill oil.
Damaged pump assembly - Check pump and replace if necessary.
Leakage of manual release valve - Valve need to be closed or changed.
Pump driveshaft or motor damaged - Change worn component.
| Trim cannot be fully up or down |
Damaged pump assembly - Change pump.
Tilt ram piston ball is in wrong position - Service or repair.
Damaged tilt ram piston O-ring - Replace O-ring.
Oil level is insufficient - Check and refill oil.
Lower check valve not seating in port side trim ram - Install valve correctly.
