Suzuki DF5 Troubleshooting
The Suzuki DF5 is a four-stroke single-cylinder overhead valve gasoline outboard engine. This engine has a carburetor fuel system, wet sump lubrication system, water cooled with thermostat, and pointless electronic ignition (PEI). A 8.4 cu.in (138 cc) outboard motor has a cylinder bore of 2.44" (62 mm), piston stroke of 1.81" (46 mm), and maximum power of 5 hp (3.7 kW) at 4500-5500 rpm. The boat motor is equipped with a manual starting system, 3-blades aluminum standard propeller, manual trim and tilt, and tiller handle steering system. The fuel tank has a capacity of 0.4 gal (1.5 liters).

| Engine hard to start or will not start |
Fuel tank is empty - Fill fuel up.
Low-quality gasoline - Change gasoline.
Air or water in fuel system - Remove water or air from fuel system.
Defective wiring connection of spark plug - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug as required.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace or clean fuel filter.
Carburetor components worn out - Repair or replace parts.
Dirty fuel lines - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Closed or clogged fuel tank air vent - Fuel tank air vent need to be opened or cleaned.
Defective fuel pump - Install new pump or repair it.
Throttle cable is adjusted improperly or worn - Change cable or adjust correctly.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Incorrect valve timing - Adjust valve timing as required.

Defective spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Defective or dirty carburetor - Service or replace carburetor.
Damaged ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Closed or restricted fuel tank air vent - Open or service air vent.
Faulty fuel pump - Install new pump or repair it.
Choke system malfunction - Inspect and replace choke system components.
Improper valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Valve timing is improper - Adjust valve timing correctly.
Broken or bad valve springs - Replace valve springs.
Valves sticking - Valves must be cleaned.

Wrong valve setting - Set the valves correctly.

Propeller shaft damaged - Replace propeller shaft.
Weeds in the propeller - Clean the propeller.
Engine mounting bolt is not tightened - Tighten the bolt as required.
