Suzuki DF5A Troubleshooting
The Suzuki DF5A is a 4-stroke 1-cylinder OHV (overhead valve) gasoline outboard engine with a rated power of 5 hp (3.7 kW) at 4500-5500 rpm. The engine cylinder bore is 2.38" (60.4 mm) and piston stroke is 1.89" (48 mm). A 8.42 cubic inches (138 cc) outboard motor has a carburetor fuel system, mechanical fuel pump type, trochoid pump lubrication system, starting system with manual starter, Digital CDI ignition system, manual tilt and tiller handle steering. The fuel tank capacity is 0.3 gal (1.0 liters). The propeller is made of aluminum and it has three blades.

Fuel tank is empty - Add gasoline.
Improper fuel grade - Use correct gasoline grade.
Fuel system clogged - Repair or replace.
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Damaged spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Fuel filter is clogged - Change fuel filter.
Carburetor malfunction - Check and repair as required.
Fuel lines are clogged - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Fuel tank air vent clogged or closed - Open or clean air vent.
Fuel pump malfunction - Repair or change fuel pump.
Incorrectly adjusted or damaged throttle cable - Adjust properly or change the cable.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Valve timing is improper - Set the valve timing correctly.

Choke system is damaged - Check and repair choke system.
Improper valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Broken or bad valve springs - Replace valve springs.
Stuck valves - Valves must be cleaned.

Water intake screen is dirty - Need to clean or wash.
Wrong valve setting - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.

Damaged piston rings or cylinder bore - Replace faulty components.

Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Change faulty components.
| Motor vibrates excessively |
Damaged or improper size of propeller - Replace propeller.
Propeller shaft malfunction - Have propeller shaft replaced.
Weeds clogs the propeller - Remove and clean propeller.
Engine mounting bolt is not tightened - Tighten the bolt as required.
Steering pivot is loose or damaged Tighten or replace.
