Suzuki DF8A Troubleshooting
The Suzuki DF8A is a four-stroke two cylinder overhead cam gasoline outboard engine. This engine has a carburetor fuel system, mechanical fuel pump, water cooled with thermostat, and pointless electronic ignition system. A 12.7 cu.in (208 cc) outboard motor has a cylinder bore of 2.00" (51 mm), piston stroke of 2.00" (51 mm), and maximum power of 8 hp (5.9 kW) at 4700-5700 rpm. The boat motor is equipped with a recoil or electric starter, 3-blades aluminum standard propeller, manual trim and tilt, and tiller handle or remote control steering system. The fuel tank has a capacity of 3.2 gal (12 liters).

| Engine starts hard or doesn't start |
Fuel tank is empty - Add gasoline.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use quality gasoline.
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Faulty spark plug wire connection - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug.
Fuel filter is clogged - Change fuel filter.
Carburetor is not adjusted - Check carburetor float adjustment.
Fuel lines are clogged - Clean fuel system lines.
Fuel tank air vent clogged or closed - Open or clean air vent.
Fuel pump malfunction - Install new pump or repair it.
Not adjusted or damaged throttle cable - Replace cable or adjust correctly.
Valve clearance is incorrect - Adjustment procedure required.
Wrong valve timing - Set the valve timing correctly.

Defective spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Defective or dirty carburetor - Clean or install new carburetor.
Ignition coil is not working - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Fuel tank air vent restricted or closed - Open or service air vent.
Fuel pump defective - Install new pump or repair it.
Faulty choke system - Inspect and replace choke system components.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjustment procedure required.
Valve timing is improper - Set the valve timing properly.
Valve springs are broken or bad - Install new valve springs.
Stuck valves - Valves must be cleaned.

Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.

Powerhead components are faulty - Change defective components.
Burned or stuck valves - Service or replace valves.
Incorrect propeller selection - Install correct propeller.

Carburetor main jet adjustment is improper - Adjust the carburetor main jet properly.
Defective or loose spark plug - Tighten or replace spark plug.
Worn rings, piston, or sleeve - Replace faulty components as required.
| Excessive motor vibration |
Damaged or improper size of propeller - Replace propeller.
Propeller shaft malfunction - Have propeller shaft replaced.
Weeds clogs the propeller - Clean the propeller.
Engine mounting bolt is not tightened - Tighten the bolt as required.
Damaged or loose steering pivot Tighten or replace.

Battery voltage is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery discharges quickly - Service battery or change it.
Battery terminals are corroded or wires are disconnected - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.
Starter motor failing - Repair or install a new starter.
