Toyota 1JZ-FSE Troubleshooting

Engine doesn't start or difficult to start

Fuel tank is empty - Fill it up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Change fuel.
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Install new spark plug.
Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Restricted fuel lines - Clean fuel lines.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Engine has bad compression - Check cylinder block and change wear parts.

Engine runs irregularly

Ignition system problems - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Clogged air filter - Clean or change air filter.
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Fuel pump is dirty or defective - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Valve clearance is wrong - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Wrong ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.

Engine starts but then stalls

Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug.
Clogged or damaged fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Ignition coil is damaged - Ignition coil must be replaced.
Bad or damaged valve springs - Install new valve springs.
Valves are stuck - Service the valves.

Engine overheating

Engine oil level low - Need to add engine oil.

Ignition timing is wrong - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Valve setting is wrong - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Coolant level is low - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Defective thermostat - Change thermostat as required.
Water pump malfunction - Change water pump as required.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale fuel - Change fuel.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Adjust the low idle speed.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Clean or change fuel pump.
Main bearings or crankshaft wear - Crankshaft or bearings need to be replaced.

Engine power is too low

Engine using too much gasoline

Plugged air filter - Replace or clean air filter.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Service or change fuel injectors.
Loose or defective spark plug - Re-tighten or replace spark plug.
Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Burned, worn, or stuck valves - Replace or clean valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace faulty parts.
Incorrect valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Engine has bad compression - Check cylinder block and change wear parts.

Engine oil consumption is too high

Gaskets or seals can be faulty - Defective components must be replaced.
Worn valve stems and valve guides - Replace the valves.
Stuck or defective piston rings - Change the piston rings as required.
Scuffed piston or cylinder liner - Check piston and liner, change as required.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are clogged - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Fuel lines clogging - Service fuel lines.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Wrong valve setting - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Air filter is dirty - Service or replace air filter.
