Toyota 1JZ-GE Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or hard to start

No gasoline in tank - Fill fuel up.
Wrong grade of gasoline - Use quality gasoline.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Spark plug wire connection are damaged - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Spark plug is faulty - Replace spark plug.
Ignition system problems - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Fuel filter is clogged - Fuel filter needs changing.
Fuel lines are clogged - Clean fuel lines.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Low compression - Check and replace worn parts.

Engine runs roughly

Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Clogged air filter - Replace or clean air filter.

Engine starts and then shuts off

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Low octane gasoline - Use correct gasoline.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Low engine oil level - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct idle settings.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Main bearings or crankshaft wear - Repair or replace defective parts.
Improper valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Damaged piston rings or cylinder bore - Replace defective parts.

Engine lacks power

Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Clean or replace fuel injectors.

Valves are stuck, burned, or worn - Replace or clean valves.
Worn sleeve, piston, or rings - Replace defective parts as required.
Incorrect valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Poor compression - Inspect and replace wear parts.

High engine oil consumption

Damaged gaskets or seals - Install new components.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Valves need to be changed.
Piston rings are stuck or broken - Have piston rings replaced.
Worn piston or cylinder liner - Inspect liner and piston, replace as necessary.

Engine backfires

Dirty fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Clogged fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Wrong ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Improper valve setting - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.
Plugged air filter - Replace or service air filter.
