Toyota 1KZ-TE Troubleshooting

Diesel hard to start or doesn't start

Fuel filter element clogging - Filter maintenance required.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replace or repair injection pump.
Valve timing is incorrect - Set the valve timing correctly.
Dirt in the fuel lines or hoses - Service fuel pipes.
Improper injection timing - Set the injection timing correctly.
Damaged piston rings and cylinder - Replace faulty components.

Diesel starts but immediately stops

Fuel filter plugging - Install new filter element.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replace or repair injection pump.
Dirty air filter element - Install new air filter element.
Improper nozzle opening pressure - Set up as recommended.

Engine shuts off suddenly during operation

Improper fuel injection timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Replace filter element.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Injection nozzles are stuck or clogged - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.

Engine stalls when idling

Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Adjustment required.
Valve clearance is wrong - Correct valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump failure - Install a new pump or rebuild.

Engine lacks power

Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Dirty air cleaner - Clean or change the filter.
Cylinder head gasket is blown - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Injection timing is out of adjustment - Set up as recommended.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Replacement or repair required.
Any of moving engine components is faulty - Repair or replace defective components.

Engine is overheated

Clogged radiator core or damaged radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Not enough coolant - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.
Fan belt slipping or worn - Replace as required.
Not enough engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Unadjusted injection timing - Use correct injection timing adjustment.

Oil pressure is low

Low oil level - Need to add oil.
Worn oil pump - Repair or change.
Oil filter clogging - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Relief valve is stuck or broken - Replace or clean relief valve.
Crankshaft bearing clearance is excessive - Inspect and change or repair worn components.
Clearance of crankpin bearing is excessive - Inspect and change or repair worn components.

Engine oil consumption is too high

External oil leaks: Worn seals or gaskets - Replace defective parts.
Crankcase oil too light - Use oil of proper viscosity.
Stuck or defective piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.
Valve stems or guides are damaged - Install new valves.
Scuffed cylinder liners or pistons - Inspect pistons and liners, replace as required.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Engine is not preheated - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Insufficient engine oil - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.
Broken or worn pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.
Connecting rod is not aligned or worn - Need to replace or align the connecting rod.

Starter turning slow

Low battery capacity - Battery needs to be recharged.
Battery discharges quickly - Service charging system or replace battery.
Battery terminals are corroded or wires are disconnected - Check cables and clean or change terminals.

Starter doesn't crank

Battery is drained or worn - Charge or change the battery.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, charge it.
Starter motor is damaged - Starter needs to be changed.
