Toyota 22R-TE Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Fuel tank is empty - Fill gasoline up.
Improper fuel grade - Change gasoline.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Faulty spark plug wire connection - Check the spark plug wire connection, repair or replace.
Faulty spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Dirty fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Fuel lines clogging - Service fuel lines.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Poor cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and change worn parts.

Unstable engine running

Ignition failure - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Clogged air filter - Clean or replace air filter.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Clean or change fuel pump.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Ignition timing is improper - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct idle adjustment.

Engine starts and stalls suddenly

Faulty spark plug - Change spark plug.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Defective ignition coil - Ignition coil must be replaced.
Valve springs are bad or broken - Change valve springs.
Valves sticking - Clean the valves.

Engine is overheated

Engine oil level is low - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing required.
Clogged fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Valve setting is improper - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Clogged radiator fins or damaged radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Not enough coolant - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.
Faulty thermostat - Thermostat need to be replaced.
Water pump malfunction - Replace water pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale or low octane fuel - Use proper gasoline.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing required.
Engine oil level low - Need to add engine oil.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Correct idle adjustment.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Main bearings or crankshaft wear - Have bearings or crankshaft replaced.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Worn piston rings or cylinder bore - Replace faulty components.

Low engine power

Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.

Cylinder head gasket is worn - Replace the head gasket.

Engine using too much gasoline

Clogged air filter - Clean or change air filter.

Ignition timing is improper - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Valves are worn, burned or stuck - Clean or change valves.
Sleeve, rings, or piston are damaged - Replace defective parts.
Valve clearance is wrong - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

High engine oil consumption

Gaskets or seals may be damaged - Install new components.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Valves need to be changed.
Worn or broken piston rings - Install new piston rings.
Worn piston or cylinder liner - Inspect liner and piston, change as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are clogged - Check fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Fuel lines clogging - Service fuel lines.
Incorrect ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Valve setting is improper - Set the valves properly.
Air filter element is clogged - Change or service air filter.
