Toyota 2AR-FE Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or hard to start

Empty gas tank - Fill fuel up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use quality gasoline.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Spark plug wiring connection is defective - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Faulty spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Ignition system failure - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Plugged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Fuel lines clogging - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Service or change fuel injectors.
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts.

Unstable engine running

Ignition system failure - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Air filter is dirty - Service or replace air filter.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Valve clearance is improper - Adjustment procedure required.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Too low idle RPM - Adjust the low idle speed.

Engine starts and stalls suddenly

Faulty spark plug - Change spark plug.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Test fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Damaged ignition coil - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Damaged or weak valve springs - Valve springs need to be changed.
Valves sticking - Clean the valves.

Engine is overheated

Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce the load.
Fuel injectors are clogged - Test fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Valve setting is improper - Set the valves correctly.
Dirty radiator fins or faulty radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Coolant level is low - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Faulty thermostat - Change thermostat.
Water pump is defective - Install new water pump.

Engine noise or knocking

Low octane fuel - Use proper gasoline.
Engine overloaded - Reduce load.
Low engine oil level - Check and refill engine oil.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Test and adjust.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Main bearings or crankshaft wear - Crankshaft or bearings need to be replaced.
Excessive valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Damaged cylinder bore or piston rings - Change faulty components.

Engine lacks power

Dirty or damaged fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Clogged air filter - Clean or replace air filter.

Blown cylinder head gasket - Replace the gasket as required.
Burned or stuck valves - Clean or replace valves.

Oil filter element is clogged - Change or service oil filter.

Engine using too much gasoline

Plugged air filter - Change or clean air filter.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Faulty or loose spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced or tightened.
Ignition timing is improper - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Stuck, burned, or worn valves - Service or change valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace faulty parts as required.
Valve clearance is improper - Adjust valve clearance.
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts.

Excessive oil consumption

Seals or gaskets are wearing excessively - Replace to repair leaks.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Need to replace the valves.
Damaged or seized piston rings - Install new piston rings.
Cylinder liner or piston is scored - Check piston and liner, install new parts as required.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are clogged - Test fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Fuel lines clogging - Fuel lines need to be cleaned.
Bad ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Valve setting is wrong - Set the valves correctly.
Air filter is dirty - Clean or change air filter.
