Toyota 2GR-FE Troubleshooting

Engine doesn't start or starts hard

No fuel in fuel tank - Fill gasoline up.
Low-quality gasoline - Use correct fuel grade.
Air or water in fuel system - Remove water or air from fuel system.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug.
Defective ignition - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Fuel filter is clogged - Change fuel filter.
Clogged fuel lines - Clean fuel lines.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Rough engine running

Ignition system is defective - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Air filter element is clogged - Change or service air filter.
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Wrong ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Test and adjust.

Engine stalls after starting

Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Service or change fuel injectors.
Ignition coil is defective - Change ignition coil as required.
Valve springs are weak or broken - Install new valve springs.
Stuck valves - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheating

Engine oil level is insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.

Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Incorrect valve setting - Set the valves properly.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator fins - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Engine coolant is insufficient - The cooling system needs to be refilled and checked for faults.
Thermostat is defective - Change thermostat.
Faulty water pump - Change water pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale fuel - Use proper gasoline.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Engine oil level is low - Need to add engine oil.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Correct the settings.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Crankshaft or main bearings are worn out - Change defective components as required.

Improper ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Valves are stuck, worn, or burned - Replace or clean valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Change faulty components.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Engine consuming too much oil

Defective seals or gaskets - Install new components.
Valve stems or guides are damaged - Valves must be replaced.
Worn or broken piston rings - Have piston rings replaced.
Piston or cylinder liner is worn - Inspect liner and piston, replace as necessary.

Engine backfires

Dirty fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and service as required.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Clean fuel system lines.
Wrong ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
