Toyota 2JZ-FSE Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Empty gas tank - Add gasoline.
Wrong fuel grade - Use correct fuel grade.
Clogged fuel system - Remove clogging.
Disconnected or loose spark plug wire - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Defective ignition - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Clogged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter.
Clogged fuel lines - Clean fuel lines.
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Service or replace fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Poor compression - Inspect and replace wear parts.

Irregular engine running

Ignition system failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Air filter element is plugged - Change or clean air filter.
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Valve clearance is wrong - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Bad ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.

Engine starts but immediately stops

Spark plug is faulty - Install new spark plug.
Clogged or damaged fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Damaged ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Valve springs are broken or bad - Valve springs need to be changed.
Valves are stuck - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheats

Low engine oil level - Fill up the engine oil.
Excessive engine load - Load reducing required.
Fuel injectors are clogged - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Ignition timing is improper - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Improper valve setting - Set the valves correctly.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Not enough coolant - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Thermostat failure - Install new thermostat.
Water pump is defective - Change water pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale fuel - Change gasoline.
Engine overload - Reduce engine load.
Low engine oil level - Need to add engine oil.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Correct idle settings.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.

Worn, stuck, or burned valves - Clean or change valves.
Sleeve, piston, or rings are damaged - Change faulty components.
Valve clearance is improper - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Poor engine compression - Check cylinder block and replace damaged components.

Engine consuming too much oil

Worn gaskets or seals - Install new components.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Change the valves.
Stuck or worn piston rings - Change piston rings.
Scored piston or cylinder liner - Inspect piston and liner, fit new components as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are clogged - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Fuel lines clogging - Fuel lines must be clean.
Wrong ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Valve setting is incorrect - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Air filter is blocked - Replace or clean air filter.
