Toyota 2NZ-FE Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start

No gasoline in tank - Add gasoline.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use correct gasoline grade.
Clogged fuel system - Remove clogging.
Disconnected or loose spark plug wire - Check the spark plug wire connection, repair or replace.
Spark plug is faulty - Change spark plug.
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Fuel filter is plugged - Install new filter.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Clean or change fuel pump.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Engine runs intermittently

Ignition system problems - Test ignition and replace failed parts.
Air filter element is clogged - Replace or clean air filter.
Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Incorrect valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Incorrect ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Test and adjust.

Engine starts but then stalls

Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Ignition coil is not working - Install a new ignition coil.
Valve springs are worn or loose - Replace valve springs.
Valves are stuck - Service the valves.

Engine is overheated

Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is running overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Clogged fuel injectors - Service or change fuel injectors.
Bad ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Valve setting is incorrect - Adjust valves as required.
Damaged radiator cap or dirty radiator core - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Engine coolant is insufficient - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Thermostat is faulty - Change thermostat as required.
Water pump failure - Water pump need to be replaced.

Engine knocks or noises

Low octane gasoline - Use correct fuel.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.
Engine oil level low - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Incorrect low idle setting - Adjust idle speed.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Main bearings or crankshaft failure - Crankshaft or bearings need to be replaced.
Incorrect valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Worn cylinder bore or piston rings - Replace faulty components.

Lack of engine power

Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Air filter is dirty - Clean or replace air filter.

Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Cylinder head gasket is defective - Replace the head gasket.

Engine uses too much fuel

Dirty air filter element - Clean or replace air filter.
Dirty or defective fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary.
Spark plug is loose or faulty - Change or re-tighten spark plug.
Ignition timing is wrong - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Valves are worn, stuck, or burned - Clean or replace valves.
Piston, sleeve, or rings are damaged - Replace defective parts.
Valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance.
Low compression - Check and replace worn parts.

High oil consumption

Worn seals or gaskets - Change worn parts according to specifications.
Damaged valve stems or valve guides - Replace the valves.

Engine backfires
