Toyota 2RZ-FE Troubleshooting

Engine is not starting or hard starting

Empty gas tank - Fill fuel up.
Low-quality gasoline - Use quality fuel.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Spark plug wiring connection is damaged - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug as required.
Defective ignition - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Fuel filter is plugged - Fuel filter needs to be replaced.
Dirty fuel lines - Clean fuel lines.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Clean or replace fuel pump.

Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Ignition timing is improper - Set the ignition timing properly.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Test and adjust.

Engine starts and then shuts off

Defective spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Defective ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Weak or damaged valve springs - New valve springs need to be installed.
Valves sticking - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine overheats

Engine oil insufficient - Check and refill engine oil.

Bad ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Wrong valve setting - Adjust valves correctly.

Engine coolant is insufficient - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Thermostat failure - Replace thermostat.
Water pump is defective - Water pump need to be replaced.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise

Stale or low octane fuel - Use correct fuel.

Excessive engine oil consumption
