Toyota 2TR-FE Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or won't start

Fuel tank is empty - Fill gasoline up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Change fuel.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Spark plug is damaged - Change spark plug.
Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Fuel filter is clogged - Replace fuel filter.
Fuel lines are clogged - Service fuel lines.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary.
Engine has low compression - Check cylinder block and replace defective parts.

Engine runs unevenly

Ignition system is defective - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Plugged air filter - Change or service air filter.
Faulty spark plug - Change spark plug.
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Service or replace fuel pump.
Excessive valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Bad ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct idle settings.

Engine starts but then stalls

Spark plug is faulty - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Clogged or damaged fuel injectors - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Damaged ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Loose or broken valve springs - Change valve springs.
Stuck valves - Service the valves.

Engine overheating

Not enough engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine overload - Reduce load.
Clogged fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Wrong ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Improper valve setting - Set the valves properly.
Clogged radiator fins or damaged radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Low engine coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Damaged thermostat - Change thermostat.
Water pump malfunction - Water pump need to be replaced.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale fuel - Use proper gasoline.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce engine load.

High fuel consumption

Ignition timing is incorrect - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Worn, stuck, or burned valves - Clean or change valves.
Worn piston, rings, or sleeve - Replace defective components.
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Weak cylinder compression - Inspect cylinder block and change worn parts.

High oil consumption

Gaskets or seals may be damaged - To repair leaks, replace worn parts.
Worn valve stems and valve guides - Install new valves.
Piston rings are stuck or worn - Install new piston rings.
Piston or cylinder liner is scored - Check piston and liner, change as required.

Engine backfires

Dirty fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and clean if necessary.
Fuel lines clogging - Service fuel lines.
Improper ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Valve setting is wrong - Adjust valves correctly.
Air filter element is clogged - Clean or replace air filter.
