Toyota 3S-FE Troubleshooting

Engine starts hard or will not start

No fuel in fuel tank - Fill it up.
Wrong fuel grade - Use quality fuel.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Disconnected or loose spark plug wire - Check the spark plug wire connection, repair or replace.
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Defective ignition - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Fuel filter is dirty - Fuel filter needs changing.
Restricted fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Test fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Poor compression - Inspect and replace wear parts.

Engine runs intermittently

Defective ignition - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Air filter is blocked - Clean or replace air filter.
Spark plug is faulty - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Service or change fuel pump.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjustment procedure required.
Incorrect ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust idling as required.

Engine starts and stops immediately

Faulty spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and change if required.
Defective ignition coil - Ignition coil should be replaced.
Loose or broken valve springs - Change valve springs.
Stuck valves - Valves must be cleaned.

Engine overheats

Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.

Ignition timing is improper - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Valve setting is wrong - Adjust valves as required.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Coolant level is low - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Thermostat is faulty - Install new thermostat.
Water pump malfunction - Install new water pump.

Engine knocking or noise

Low octane gasoline - Change gasoline.
Engine overload - Reduce engine load.
Engine oil level low - Fill up the oil to required level.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Correct idle adjustment.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Clean or change fuel pump.
Crankshaft or main bearings wear - Repair or replace defective parts.

Engine power is insufficient

Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Service or change fuel injectors.
Air filter is dirty - Change or clean air filter.

Cylinder head gasket is damaged - Replace cylinder head gasket.

Engine using too much gasoline

Burned, worn, or stuck valves - Service or replace valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace faulty components.
Excessive valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Low engine compression - Inspect cylinder block and change defective components.

High engine oil consumption

Defective seals or gaskets - To repair leaks, replace worn parts.
Damaged valve guides or valve stems - Replace the valves.
Damaged or seized piston rings - Install new piston rings.
Scuffed piston or cylinder liner - Inspect liner and piston, fit new parts as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Clean fuel system lines.
Improper ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Valve setting is wrong - Set the valves properly.
Air filter is dirty - Service or change air filter.
