Toyota 5A-FE Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or doesn't start

Fuel tank is empty - Fill it up.
Low-quality gasoline - Use correct fuel grade.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Damaged spark plug wiring connection - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug.
Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Dirty fuel filter - Fuel filter needs changing.
Dirty fuel lines - Clean fuel system lines.
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Clean or install new fuel pump.
Dirty or damaged fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Poor cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and change worn parts.

Engine runs irregularly

Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Air filter element is plugged - Replace or clean air filter.
Spark plug is faulty - Replace spark plug.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Service or change fuel pump.
Valve clearance is not correct - Check and adjust.
Improper ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust idling as required.

Engine starts but then stops

Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or damaged fuel injectors - Check fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Damaged ignition coil - Install a new ignition coil.
Valve springs are damaged or weak - Change valve springs.
Valves are stuck - Valves must be cleaned.

Engine overheated

Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Excessive engine load - Reduce load.
Clogged fuel injectors - Service or change fuel injectors.
Ignition timing is improper - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Incorrect valve setting - Adjust valves correctly.
Radiator core is dirty or radiator cap is damaged - Clean radiator or change cap.
Engine coolant is insufficient - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Damaged thermostat - Replace thermostat.
Defective water pump - Install new water pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Stale fuel - Change gasoline.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce engine load.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Need to add engine oil.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Adjustment required.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Worn main bearings or crankshaft - Need to install new components.

Loss of engine power

Engine uses too much fuel

Spark plug is loose or defective - Change or re-tighten spark plug.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Valves are stuck, worn, or burned - Service or change valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace faulty components as required.
Valve clearance is improper - Adjustment procedure required.
Engine has bad compression - Check cylinder block and change wear parts.

Engine using too much oil

Defective seals or gaskets - New components need to be installed.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Valves need to be changed.
Stuck or worn piston rings - Have piston rings replaced.
Damaged cylinder liner or piston - Inspect piston and liner, replace as required.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Service or change fuel injectors.
Restricted fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Incorrect ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly.
Wrong valve setting - Set the valves correctly.
Air filter is dirty - Clean or replace air filter.
