Toyota 5E-FE Engine Specifications
The Toyota 5E-FE is a 1.5 L (1,497 cc, 91.35 cubic inches)
straight-four 4-stroke naturally aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota
E-family. The engine was manufactured from 1990 to 1998.
The engine used a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head with
dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in
total). A 74.0 mm (2.91 in) cylinder bore and 87.0 mm (3.43 in) piston
stroke give the 5E-FE engine a total of 1,497 cc of displacement.
Compression ratio rating is 9.8:1.
The Toyota 5EFE engine has electronic fuel injection system and
different ignition systems: ignition system with a distributor,
distributor-less with coil pack and electronic control and after 1995
Toyota changed the ignition system to a distributor-less (DIS),
coil-on-plug design. The coil-on-plug design uses two coils, each coil
mounts on top of a spark plug, but also has a cable run to another
cylinder’s spark plug. In 1995 Toyota switched from OBD to OBD-II and
began using flat-topped pistons.
The engine produced from 94 PS (69 kW; 92 HP) at 5,400 rpm to 112 PS (82
kW; 110 HP) at 6,400 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 123 Nm (12.5
kgm, 90.7 ft-lb) at 3,200 rpm to 136 Nm (13.9 kgm, 100.2 ft-lb) at 4,000
rpm of peak torque.
Engine code identification:
5 - 5 generation engine

CYLINDER BLOCK |
The Toyota 5E-FE has a cast-iron cylinder block with five bearing
support system. It has a 74.0 mm (2.91 in) cylinder bore and 87.0 mm
(3.43 in) piston stroke. Compression ratio rating is 9.8:1. The engine
has a crankshaft with eight balance weights.

CYLINDER HEAD |
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling
efficiency. The engine has dual overhead camshafts, that are driven by a
timing belt and four valves per cylinder (16 valves in total). The 5E-FE
engine used special valve shims to adjust the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data
Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance
comes within specified values.
R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance
Intake:
N = R + [M - 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M - 0.36 mm (0.014 in)]
Valve lifters are available in 17 sizes to range from 2.50 mm (0.098 in)
to 3.30 mm (0.130 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).
Example (intake valve):
R = 2.60 mm
M = 0.55 mm
N = 2.60 + (0.55 - 0.20) = 2.95 mm.
