Toyota 5L-E Troubleshooting

Engine starts up hard or will not start

Clogged fuel filter - Filter maintenance required.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Clogged injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Valve timing is wrong - Adjust or change timing gear.
Fuel pipes clogging - Clean or change fuel pipes.
Injection timing is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.
Piston rings and cylinder are worn - Change faulty components.

Engine starts but then stalls

Clogged fuel filter - Clean the filter element.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Install a new pump or rebuild.
Air cleaner is dirty - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Nozzle opening pressure is improper - Adjust as recommended.

Engine stalls after running

Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust as recommended.
Fuel filter element clogging - Filter maintenance required.
Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Stuck or burnt injection nozzle - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.

Engine stops at idle

Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Excessive valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Install a new pump or rebuild.

Low engine power

Defective or clogged injection nozzle - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Fuel lines or hoses are clogged - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Dirty air filter element - Clean or replace element.
Cylinder head gasket is worn - Replace the gasket as required.
Injection timing is wrong - Use correct injection timing adjustment.
Fuel injection pump is damaged - Rebuild or replace pump.
One of moving engine components is worn - Repair or replace defective components.

Engine overheating

Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Not enough coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Broken or loose fan belt - Change the fan belt.
Engine oil insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Cylinder head gasket is defective - Gasket should be replaced.
Injection timing is wrong - Check injection timing adjustment.

Oil pressure too low

Low oil level - Check and refill the oil.
Oil pump is defective - Repair or change.
Oil filter element clogged - Replace or service engine oil filter.
Relief valve is defective or dirty - Replace or service relief valve.
Crankshaft bearing clearance is excessive - Check and change or repair defective parts.
Crankpin bearing clearance is excessive - Check and change or repair defective parts.

High oil consumption

Oil leaking: Worn gaskets or seals - Worn parts need to be replaced.
Oil viscosity is wrong - Use proper viscosity oil.
Piston rings are stuck or broken - Change piston rings.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Change the valves.
Scuffed cylinder liners or pistons - Inspect pistons and liners, fit new components as necessary.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up to required temperature.
Engine oil insufficient - Check and refill engine oil.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Pistons are broken or worn - Replace the pistons as required.
Connecting rod is worn or misaligned - Need to change or align the connecting rod.

Starter turning slow

Low battery voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service or replace the battery.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals.

Starter doesn't crank

Battery is drained or worn - Charge or change the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Low battery capacity - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is faulty - Starter should be replaced.
