Toyota 7M-GE Troubleshooting

Engine difficult to start or won't start

No gasoline in tank - Fill it up.
Wrong grade of gasoline - Use quality fuel.
Air or water in fuel system - Remove water or air from fuel system.
Loose or disconnected spark plug wire - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Damaged spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Dirty fuel filter - Change fuel filter.
Fuel lines clogging - Fuel lines must be clean.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Service or replace fuel pump.
Clogged or damaged fuel injectors - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Low compression - Check and replace worn parts.

Irregular engine running

Ignition system failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Clogged air filter - Change or clean air filter.
Spark plug is defective - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Valve clearance is improper - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Ignition timing is wrong - Set the ignition timing properly.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Correct idle adjustment.

Engine starts and stops

Faulty spark plug - Change spark plug as required.
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Ignition coil is defective - Ignition coil must be replaced.
Loose or worn valve springs - Valve springs need to be changed.
Valves sticking - Valves must be cleaned.

Engine overheating

Engine oil level is low - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce the load.
Fuel injectors are dirty - Inspect fuel injectors and service as required.
Bad ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Valve setting is wrong - Set the valves properly.
Radiator core is dirty or radiator cap is damaged - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Insufficient coolant fluid - The cooling system needs to be refilled and checked for faults.
Faulty thermostat - Change thermostat as required.
Water pump is defective - Change water pump.

Engine noise or knocking

Stale fuel - Use proper fuel.
Engine is overloaded - Reduce load.
Engine oil insufficient - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Incorrect low idle setting - Test and adjust.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Worn crankshaft or main bearings - Replace crankshaft or bearings.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Worn cylinder bore or piston rings - Change defective components.

Engine power loss

Dirty or damaged fuel injectors - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Plugged air filter - Clean or replace air filter.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Service or replace fuel pump.
Defective ignition system - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts.
Worn cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Valves are stuck or burned - Change or clean valves.
Cylinder block components are faulty - Replace defective components as required.
Dirty oil filter element - Change or clean oil filter.

Excessive fuel consumption

Plugged air filter - Replace or clean air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Loose or defective spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced or tightened.
Improper ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Valves are stuck, burned, or worn - Change or service valves.
Worn sleeve, rings, or piston - Replace defective parts as required.
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Weak cylinder compression - Inspect cylinder block and change worn parts.

Engine oil consumption is too high

Defective seals or gaskets - Replace to repair leaks.
Valve stems and guides are worn - Need to replace the valves.
Piston rings are defective or worn - Have piston rings replaced.
Piston or cylinder liner is damaged - Inspect piston and liner, fit new components as necessary.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Inspect fuel injectors and service as required.
Fuel lines clogging - Clean fuel system lines.
Bad ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Improper valve setting - Set the valves correctly.
Air filter element is clogged - Change or clean air filter.
