Toyota 2E Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or difficult to start

Gas tank is empty - Fill it up.
Incorrect fuel grade - Use correct gasoline grade.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Spark plug wiring connection is damaged - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Dirty fuel filter - Fuel filter needs to be replaced.
Dirty fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Fuel pump is faulty or clogged - Service or change fuel pump.
Fuel injectors are clogged or faulty - Check fuel injectors and change if required.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Irregular engine running

Defective ignition - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Air filter is blocked - Replace or service air filter.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Incorrect valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Incorrect ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Too low idle RPM - Adjust the low idle speed.

Engine starts but then stops

Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required.
Dirty or faulty fuel injectors - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Defective ignition coil - Change ignition coil as required.
Damaged or weak valve springs - Replace valve springs.
Valves are stuck - Valves need to be cleaned.

Engine keeps overheating

Engine oil insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine overloaded - Reduce engine load.
Fuel injectors are dirty - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Bad ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Improper valve setting - Set the valves properly.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Low coolant level - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Faulty thermostat - Change thermostat.
Water pump is defective - Install new water pump.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Stale or low octane fuel - Use correct gasoline.
Engine overloaded - Reduce load.
Engine oil insufficient - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Test and adjust.
Dirty or damaged fuel pump - Service or change fuel pump.
Main bearings or crankshaft wear - Have bearings or crankshaft replaced.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Damaged cylinder bore or piston rings - Replace faulty components.

Engine lacks power

Dirty or damaged fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and replace if necessary.
Dirty air filter element - Clean or change air filter.
Clogged or damaged fuel pump - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Ignition failure - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Blown cylinder head gasket - Change cylinder head gasket.
Valves are stuck or burned - Change or clean valves.
Cylinder block parts are worn out - Replace defective parts as required.
Plugged oil filter - Service or change oil filter.

Excessive fuel consumption

Dirty air filter element - Change or service air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Loose or faulty spark plug - Spark plug need to be tightened or replaced.
Wrong ignition timing - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Valves are worn, burned or stuck - Change or service valves.
Sleeve, piston, or rings are damaged - Replace defective components.
Improper valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Poor engine compression - Check cylinder block and replace damaged components.

High engine oil consumption

Worn gaskets or seals - New components need to be installed.
Valve guides and stems are worn - Change the valves.
Worn or stuck piston rings - Install new piston rings.
Damaged piston or cylinder liner - Check piston and liner, change as required.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Service or change fuel injectors.
Restricted fuel lines - Service fuel lines.
Bad ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Incorrect valve setting - Valves needs to be adjusted properly.
Clogged air filter - Change or service air filter.
