Toyota 4E-FE Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or hard to start

Empty gas tank - Fill it up.
Wrong grade of gasoline - Use quality fuel.
Clogged fuel system - Remove clogging.
Spark plug wiring connection is damaged - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change.
Spark plug is faulty - Install new spark plug.
Ignition system is defective - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Clogged fuel filter - Fuel filter needs to be replaced.
Dirt in the fuel lines - Fuel lines must be clean.
Dirty or faulty fuel pump - Inspect fuel pump and change as required.
Fuel injectors are defective or dirty - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Rough engine running

Defective ignition - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Plugged air filter - Replace or clean air filter.
Spark plug is damaged - Replace spark plug.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Service or replace fuel pump.
Valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Ignition timing is incorrect - Set the ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Correct idle settings.

Engine stops after starting

Faulty spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Fuel injectors are damaged or dirty - Service or change fuel injectors.
Ignition coil is faulty - Install a new ignition coil.
Bad or broken valve springs - New valve springs need to be installed.
Valves are stuck - Service the valves.

Engine overheated

Insufficient engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is under excessive load - Load reducing is recommended.
Fuel injectors are clogged - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Wrong ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Incorrect valve setting - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Coolant level is low - Top up coolant fluid and check system for leaks.
Thermostat failure - Change thermostat.
Water pump is defective - Install new water pump.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise

Stale or low octane fuel - Use proper fuel.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce engine load.
Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Adjust as required.
Fuel pump is clogged or faulty - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Crankshaft or main bearings failure - Replace crankshaft or bearings.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Cylinder bore or piston rings are worn - Replace faulty parts.

Loss of engine power

Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary.
Plugged air filter - Change or clean air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Clean or replace fuel pump.
Ignition system malfunction - Check ignition system and replace faulty parts.
Cylinder head gasket is damaged - Replace the gasket as required.
Valves are burned or stuck - Replace or service valves.
Damaged cylinder block components - Change defective parts.
Oil filter is blocked - Change or service oil filter.

High fuel consumption

Air filter is blocked - Clean or replace air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Clean or install new fuel injectors.
Spark plug is loose or defective - Tighten or replace spark plug.
Wrong ignition timing - Set the ignition timing properly.
Valves are worn, burned or stuck - Service or change valves.
Worn rings, piston, or sleeve - Replace faulty parts.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjustment procedure required.
Bad compression - Check and change damaged parts.

Engine using too much oil

Worn gaskets or seals - Replace to repair leaks.
Damaged valve guides or valve stems - Install new valves.
Piston rings are seized or worn - Change piston rings.
Scored cylinder liner or piston - Check piston and liner, change as required.

Engine backfires

Fuel injectors are dirty - Service or change fuel injectors.
Fuel lines are clogged - Clean fuel lines.
Ignition timing is wrong - Ignition timing needs to be adjusted correctly.
Improper valve setting - Valves needs to be set correctly.
Clogged air filter - Clean or change air filter.
