Toyota 4E-FE Engine Specifications
The Toyota 4E-FE is a 1.3 l (1,331 cc, 81.22 cubic inches)
straight-four 4-stroke naturally aspirated gasoline engine from Toyota
E-family. The Toyota 4EFE engine was manufactured from 1989, and was
discontinued after 1999.
The 4E-FE engine features a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head
with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in
total). Compression ratio rating is 9.6:1. It has a 74.0 mm (2.91 in)
cylinder bore and 77.4 mm (3.05 in) piston stroke. The engine has electronic
fuel injection system and ignition system with a distributor.
The engine produced from 75 PS (55 kW; 74 HP) at 5,400 rpm to 100 PS (74
kW; 99 HP) at 6,600 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 110 Nm (11.2 kgm,
81.1 ft-lb) at 3,600 rpm to 117 Nm (11.9 kgm, 86.2 ft-lb) at 4,000 rpm
of peak torque.
During production, three generations of the 4EFE engine were available.
Engines differed mainly in a modified intake and exhaust manifolds and
ECU, as a result, it had different output power and torque.
Engine code identification:
4 - 4 generation engine
E - Engine family
F - Economy narrow-angle DOHC
E - Multi Point Fuel Injection

CYLINDER HEAD |
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling
efficiency. The engine has dual overhead camshafts, that are driven by a
timing belt and four valves per cylinder (16 valves in total). The 4E-FE
engine used special valve shims to adjust the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data
Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance
comes within specified values.
R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance
Intake:
N = R + [M - 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M - 0.36 mm (0.014 in)]
Valve lifters are available in 17 sizes to range from 2.50 mm (0.098 in)
to 3.30 mm (0.130 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).
Example (intake valve):
R = 2.60 mm
M = 0.55 mm
N = 2.60 + (0.55 - 0.20) = 2.95 mm.
