Husqvarna TC138 Troubleshooting

The Husqvarna TC 138 is a two-wheel drive lawn tractor with cast-iron front axle. This model was manufactured from 2014 to 2019. The Husqvarna TC138 driveline components: Briggs and Stratton 31R577 Intek 4-cycle single cylinder OHV vertical shaft air-cooled gasoline engine and Tuff Torq K46 DF belt-driven hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

A 30.5 cu.in (500 cc) engine has a cylinder bore of 3.56" (91 mm), piston stroke of 3.06" (78 mm), and rated power of 13.5 hp (10 kW). Max. forward speed - 5 mph (8 kph), max. reverse speed - 2.2 mph (3.5 kph).

The tractor was equipped with 15x6.00-6 front tires and 18x8.50-8 rear tires. The wheelbase is 46.8 in (1190 mm). The lawn tractor is compatible with a 38" mid-mount 2-blade side discharge mower deck with cutting height of 1.5-4.0" (38-102 mm), six cut positions, and mechanical lift system.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or hard to start
No fuel in fuel tank - Add fuel
Improper fuel grade - Use correct fuel grade
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air
Faulty spark plug wire connection - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair
Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug as required
Fuel filter is dirty - Replace fuel filter
Brake pedal not pushed down - Push the brake pedal down
Carburetor components worn out - Repair or replace parts

Engine uses too much fuel
Insufficient choke opening - Inspect choke cable and adjust as required
Carburetor main jet adjustment is incorrect - Adjust main jet as required
Spark plug is defective or loose - Replace or tighten spark plug
Burned, worn, or stuck valves - Change or service valves
Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Change faulty components
Improper valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance
Engine consuming too much oil
Gaskets or seals can be faulty - Replace to repair leaks

Breather hose or pipe is clogged - Change or service

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission noises
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Replace or adjust linkage
Transmission overloaded - The load should be reduced
Transmission oil is contaminated or oil level is insufficient - Add oil to proper level or pour fresh transmission oil
Damaged or worn components of hydrostatic transmission - Check internal transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required
Difficult shifting
Stuck or damaged gshift linkage - Replace or repair the linkage
Defective or stuck hydrostatic pump - Repair or change pump
Transmission shift control components are worn or unadjusted - Adjust properly or change
Loss of power
Insufficient transmission oil - Check and refill the transmission oil
Drive sheave is damaged or worn - Install a new sheave
Shift linkage is damaged or unadjusted - Replace or adjust linkage
Speed control pedal linkage is bent or not adjusted - Repair or adjust linkage
Transmission leakage
Transmission gaskets or seals are worn - Replace seals or gaskets
Leaking final drive shaft - Replace shaft seals
Transmission case is cracked - Change broken case

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibrates too much
Worn or dirty mower drive pulley - Service or change pulley
Drive belt is damaged or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt
Cutting blades are not balanced or warped - Replace or balance blades
Loose blade bolts tightening - Tighten it fast
Discharge chute keeps clogging
Ground speed is too fast - Use a slower speed
Grass is too high - Need to set low cutting height
Engine runs at low revs - Adjust throttle to full opening

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery will not charge
Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or clean connections
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Install new terminal clamps
Worn-out battery - Battery replacement required
Starter motor turns slow
Low battery output voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required
Battery won’t hold charge - Battery needs service or replacement
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Connect wires correctly or change terminals
Starter is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly
Battery power is low - Charge the battery
Faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plug - Clean, gap or replace spark plug
Starter motor or solenoid failing - Repair starter or install a new solenoid
