John Deere X300 Troubleshooting

The John Deere X300 is a 2-wheel drive lawn tractor from Select X300 series. This model was manufactured from 2006 to 2015. The John Deere X300 tractor can be powered by the following engines: Kawasaki FH491V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 17 Hp (12.7 kW) or Kawasaki FS600V 4-cycle V-Twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 18.5 Hp (13.8 kW).

This model is fitted with Tuff Torq hydro transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The John Deere X300 is equipped with a manual steering, electric PTO clutch, wet disc brakes, 15x6.00-6 front tires, and 20x10.00-8 rear tires. The operating weight is 483 lbs (219 kg). The tractor is compatible with the following attachments: 38", 42" or 48" mid-mount mower deck with a mechanical lift system, 44" front-mount 2-stage snow blower, and 44" front blade.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or difficult to start
Fuel tank is empty - Fill gasoline up
Wrong fuel grade - Change gasoline
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines
Spark plug wiring connection is defective - Check the spark plug wire connection, repair or replace
Damaged spark plug - Replace spark plug
Fuel filter is dirty - Fuel filter needs changing

Throttle does not open well - Inspect throttle cable and adjust it
Carburetor main jet is incorrectly adjusted - Adjust the carburetor main jet properly
Spark plug is loose or faulty - Re-tighten or replace spark plug
Burned, worn, or stuck valves - Replace or clean valves
Piston, sleeve, or rings are damaged - Replace defective components as required
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjustment procedure required
Engine consuming too much oil

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
Hydrostatic transmission is making noise
Defective or not adjusted speed control pedal linkage - Replace or adjust linkage
Transmission overload - Reduce transmission load
Transmission oil is contaminated or oil level is insufficient - Add oil to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh oil
Damaged or worn components of hydrostatic transmission - After disassembly and inspection, replace defective components
Hard shifting
Shift linkage is stuck or damaged - Clean or change linkage
Hydrostatic pump is blocked or defective - Replace or repair pump
Transmission shift control parts are damaged or misadjusted - Replace or adjust as required
Power is insufficient
Low oil level - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level
Damaged or worn drive pulley - Change pulley
Shifter linkage is faulty or not adjusted - Change or adjust linkage
Worn or unadjusted speed control linkage - Adjust or replace linkage
Transmission leakage
Damaged transmission seals or gaskets - Install new gaskets or seals
Final drive shaft is leaking - Install new shaft seals
Cracked transmission case - Install a new transmission case

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibrates excessively
Worn or dirty mower drive pulley - Clean or change pulley
Damaged or loose drive belt - Adjust belt tension or replace belt
Warped or not balanced mower blades - Balance or replace blades
Loose blade bolts tightening - Bolts need to be tightened
Discharge chute keeps clogging
Fast ground speed - Use a slower speed
Grass is too long - Use a lower cutting height
Engine runs at low revs - Throttle is not fully open
Cutting level is too low - Need to set high cutting height
Improper drive belt installation - Install drive belt as required
Grass patches are not cut
Deck is plugged with grass - Inspect and clean cutting deck
Blades are excessively dull - Sharpen the blades
Worn or damaged blades - Install new blades
Fast mowing speed - Need to slow down
Mower deck set to low cutting - Need to set high cutting height
Grass bag is overfilled - Remove grass from bag
Blades scalping grass
Lawn is bumpy or not smooth - Roll or level the lawn
Mower cuts too low - Raise the cutting height
Fast mowing speed - Use a slower speed
Incorrect level of mower deck - Level the deck correctly
Blades are bent or worn - Blades must be changed
Low tire inflation - Inflate tires correctly
Uneven cutting
Low tire inflation - Inflate tires correctly
Deck is not leveled correctly - Level the deck properly
Blades are not sharp - Sharpen the blades
Bent or worn blades - Install new blades
Discharge area is clogged - Clean mower deck as required
Deck shell is broken - Replace or rebuild mower deck
Mower spindle is faulty or loose - Repair or replace the spindle

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge
Corroded or loose wire connections - Service or tighten connections
Battery terminal connectors are faulty - Replace terminal connectors
Battery failing - Change the battery
Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery capacity - Battery is drained, charge it
Battery is not holding charge - Service battery or replace it
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals
Starter motor won't turn
Battery is discharged or defective - Need to charge or replace the battery
Battery wiring is disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect wiring and connect as required
Low battery power - Charge the battery
Spark plug faulty or incorrectly gapped - Replace or clean and gap
Solenoid or starter motor failure - Change solenoid or repair starter
