John Deere X304 Troubleshooting

The John Deere X304 is a two-wheel drive lawn tractor from Select X300 series. This model was manufactured from 2006 to 2015. The tractor can be powered by the following engines: Kawasaki FH491V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 17 Hp (12.7 kW) or Kawasaki FS600V 4-cycle V-Twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 18.5 Hp (13.8 kW).

This model is fitted with Tuff Torq hydro transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The John Deere X304 is equipped with a manual four-wheel steering, electric PTO clutch, wet disc brakes, 15x6.00-6 front tires, and 20x10.00-8 rear tires. The operating weight is 540 lbs (245 kg). The John Deere X304 tractor is compatible with the following attachments: 42" mid-mount 2-blade mower deck with a cutting height of 1.0-4.0 in (25-102 mm), 44" front-mount dual-stage snowblower, and 44" front blade.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or hard to start
No gasoline in tank - Add gasoline
Improper fuel grade - Use correct gasoline grade
Fuel system clogged - Repair or replace
Spark plug wire is disconnected or loose - Inspect spark plug wiring connection, change or repair
Spark plug is defective - Spark plug need to be replaced
Plugged fuel filter - Change fuel filter
Brake pedal not depressed - Press the brake pedal
Carburetor malfunction - Check and repair as required
Poor cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and change worn parts
Not adjusted or damaged throttle cable - Adjust properly or replace the cable
Rough engine running
Air intake screen is plugged - Need to wash or clean
Ignition system failure - Inspect ignition system and change faulty parts
Stuck or defective choke cable - Change or clean the cable
Plugged air filter - Replace or clean air filter
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Clean or change fuel pump
Engine starts and stalls suddenly
Spark plug is defective - Replace spark plug
Carburetor is defective or dirty - Repair or clean carburetor
Damaged ignition coil - Replace ignition coil as necessary
Valve springs are damaged or weak - Install new valve springs
Valves sticking - Valves must be cleaned
Engine overheated
Lack of engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil

Clogged cooling fins - Need to wash or clean

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
Hydrostatic transmission makes noise
Worn or unadjusted speed control linkage - Adjust or install new linkage
Excessive loading - Load needs to be reduced
Oil is dirty or oil level is too low - Add oil to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh oil
Worn or defective transmission components - After disassembling and inspection, change defective components
Shifting is hard
Corroded or worn shift linkage - Lubricate or change linkage
Faulty or blocked hydrostatic pump - Repair or change pump
Transmission shift control parts are faulty or unadjusted - Change or adjust correctly
Loss of power
Insufficient transmission oil - Check transmission oil level and add oil as required
Drive pulley is defective or worn - Change pulley
Shifter linkage is not adjusted or faulty - Adjust properly or change linkage
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Adjust or repair linkage
Transmission leaks
Transmission gaskets or seals are worn - Change gaskets or seals
Final drive shaft leaks - Replace shaft seals
Cracked transmission case - Change broken case

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Excessive mower vibration
Drive sheave of mower deck is dirty or worn - Change or clean sheave
Worn or loose drive belt - Adjust belt tension or replace belt
Warped or not balanced mower blades - Balance or change blades
Loose blade bolts tightening - Bolts need to be tightened
Discharge chute is regularly plugged
Fast mowing speed - Use a lower speed
Long grass - Adjust mower to lower cutting height
Reduced engine rpm - Adjust throttle to full opening
Mower cuts too low - Need to set high cutting height
Drive belt installation is not correct - Install drive belt as required
Patches of grass uncut
Mower deck is clogged - Mower deck needs to be cleaned
Excessive blade dullness - Blades need to be sharpened
Worn or defective blades - Blades must be changed
High ground speed - Select a slower speed
Mower deck set to low cutting - Need to set high cutting height
Full grass bag - Grass bag must be empty
Blades are scalping the grass

High ground speed - Need to slow down
Deck level is not correct - Level the deck correctly
Worn or bent blades - Replace the blades
Tire pressure is too low - Inflate tires as required
Mower deck to cut unevenly
Incorrect tire pressure - Inflate tires correctly
Deck is not leveled correctly - Deck should be adjusted correctly
Not sharp blades - Blades need to be sharpened
Worn or defective blades - Blades need to be replaced
Deck clogged with grass clippings - Mower deck needs to be cleaned
Damaged mower deck housing - Replace or rebuild mower deck
Mower spindle is faulty or loose - Change or repair the spindle

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged
Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps
Faulty cell in battery - Change the battery
Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it
Battery runs out quickly - Service battery or change it
Disconnected battery cables or bad terminals - Connect wires properly or change terminals
Starter motor is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Replace or charge as required
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly
Battery power is low - Charge the battery
Spark plug dirty or improperly gapped - Clean, gap or replace spark plug
Starter motor or solenoid is defective - Repair starter or install a new solenoid
