John Deere X390 Troubleshooting

The John Deere X390 is a 2-wheel drive lawn tractor from Select X300 series. This model was manufactured from 2016 to 2025. The John Deere X390 tractor can be powered by the following engines: Kawasaki FS651V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 22 Hp (16.4 kW) or Kawasaki FR691V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 23 Hp (17.3 kW).

This model is fitted with Tuff Torq hydro transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The John Deere X390 is equipped with a power steering system, electric PTO clutch, wet disc brakes, 15x6.50-8 front tires, and 22x11.00-10 rear tires. The operating weight is 534 lbs (242 kg). The tractor is compatible with the following attachments: 48" or 54" mid-mount 3-blade right-discharge mower deck with a cutting height of 1.0-4.0 in (25-102 mm), 44" front-mount dual-stage snowblower, and 44" front blade.

High fuel consumption

Valves are stuck, burned, or worn - Change or service valves
Rings, sleeve, or piston are damaged - Replace defective parts
Valve clearance is incorrect - Adjustment procedure required
High oil consumption
Gaskets or seals may be damaged - Install new components

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission is excessively noisy
Bent or unadjusted speed control pedal linkage - Change or adjust linkage
Excessive transmission load - Reduce the load is required
Insufficient oil level or contaminated oil - Add oil to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh oil
Worn or defective parts of the hydrostatic transmission - Check internal transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required
Hard to shift
Shift linkage is stuck or damaged - Clean or change linkage
Hydrostatic pump is defective or blocked - Repair or change pump
Transmission shift control components are defective or misadjusted - Adjust correctly or replace
Lack of power
Transmission oil level is low - Fill the transmission housing with oil
Drive pulley is damaged or worn - Install a new pulley
Shift linkage is unadjusted or damaged - Adjust properly or replace linkage
Bent or unadjusted speed control pedal linkage - Adjust or install new linkage
Transmission leaks
Transmission seals or gaskets are broken - Change seals or gaskets
Final drive shaft leakage - Install new shaft seals
Transmission housing is cracked - Install a new transmission housing

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibration is excessive
Drive sheave of mower deck is dirty or worn - Replace or clean sheave
Loose or defective drive belt - Adjust belt tension or replace belt
Mower blades are bent or out of balance - Balance or change as needed
Blade bolts are not tightened well - Bolts need to be tightened
Discharge chute is regularly plugged
Fast ground speed - Use a lower speed
Long grass - Need to set low cutting height
Engine is running at too low speed - Open throttle fully
Low cutting height - Need to set high cutting height
Improper drive belt installation - Install drive belt correctly

Improperly leveled mower deck - Level the deck correctly

Tires are not correctly inflated - Need to inflate tires

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery is not charging
Corroded or loose cable connections - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections
Defective electrical terminal connectors - Change terminal connectors
Defective battery - Use a new battery
Starter cranks slowly
Low battery voltage - Charge the battery
Battery drains quickly - Service charging system or install new battery
Disconnected wires or corroded battery terminals - Connect wiring properly or install new terminals
Starter will not crank
Battery is discharged or worn - Recharge or change battery
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required
Battery capacity is low - Low battery charging, charge as required
Improperly gapped or dirty spark plug - Replace or clean and gap
Solenoid or starter motor is faulty - Change solenoid or repair starter
