John Deere X394 Troubleshooting

The John Deere X394 lawn tractor from Select X300 Series was manufactured between 2016 and 2025. The John Deere X394 tractor can be powered by the following engines: Kawasaki FS651V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 22 Hp (16.4 kW) or Kawasaki FR691V 4-cycle V-twin cylinder OHV air-cooled gasoline engine with a rated power of 23 Hp (17.3 kW).

This model is fitted with a belt-driven hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The John Deere X394 is equipped with a power four-wheel steering, electric PTO clutch, wet disc brakes, 15x6.50-8 front tires, and 22x9.50-12 rear tires. The operating weight is 615 lbs (278 kg). The tractor is compatible with а 48" mid-mount 3-blade mower deck with a hydraulic lift system, 44" front-mount 2-stage snowblower, and 46" front blade.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine won't start or hard to start
Fuel tank is empty - Fill fuel up
Low-quality gasoline - Use correct gasoline grade
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system
Defective wiring connection of spark plug - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change
Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug
Plugged fuel filter - Fuel filter needs changing

Bad engine compression - Inspect cylinder block and replace worn components

Air filter element is clogged - Clean or replace air filter

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission is making noise
Speed control pedal linkage is bent or not adjusted - Adjust or install new linkage
Transmission is under excessive load - Load needs to be reduced
Transmission oil is contaminated or oil level is insufficient - Add oil to proper level or pour fresh transmission oil
Damaged or worn components of hydrostatic transmission - Check internal transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required
Hard shifting
Stuck or damaged gshift linkage - Replace or repair the linkage
Blocked or faulty hydrostatic pump - Repair or replace pump
Transmission shift control parts are faulty or unadjusted - Adjust correctly or replace
Loss of power
Transmission oil insufficient - Fill up the transmission oil
Worn or faulty drive pulley - Change pulley
Not adjusted or damaged shifter linkage - Adjust properly or replace linkage
Speed control pedal linkage is bent or not adjusted - Adjust or change linkage
Transmission leaks
Worn transmission seals or gaskets - Install new seals or gaskets
Leaking final drive shaft - Shaft seals need to be changed
Cracked transmission housing - Install a new transmission housing

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibration is excessive
Damaged or clogged mower drive pulley - Clean or replace pulley
Drive belt is worn or loose - Adjust belt tension or install a new belt
Unbalanced or warped mower blades - Balance or replace blades
Loose blade mounting bolts - Tighten it fast
Discharge chute regular clogging
Fast mowing speed - Need to slow down
Grass is too high - Adjust mower to lower cutting height
Engine runs at low revs - Adjust choke to full opening
Low cutting height - Adjust mower to higher cutting height
Drive belt installed improperly - Install drive belt as required
Lawn mower leaving uncut grass

Broken mower deck shell - Replace or rebuild mower deck
Mower spindle is bent or loose - Spindle needs to be repaired or replaced

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery won’t charge
Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or service connections
Battery terminal connectors are defective - Terminal connectors need to be changed
Worn-out battery - Battery change required
Starter motor cranks slow
Battery power is low - Low battery charging, charge as required
Battery discharges quickly - Service battery or change it
Terminals are faulty or battery cables are disconnected - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals
Starter will not work
Battery is discharged or worn - Charge or replace the battery
Wire harness is disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wire harness and connect as required
Low battery output - Recharge the battery
Improperly gapped or dirty spark plug - Clean, gap or change spark plug
Defective solenoid or starter motor - Starter/solenoid needs to be replaced
