John Deere X485 Troubleshooting

The John Deere X485 garden tractor from HD GT X Series was manufactured between 2002 and 2005. The John Deere X485 tractor is powered by Kawasaki FD711D 4-cycle V-Twin cylinder OHV horizontal shaft air-cooled gasoline engine. A 45.5 cubic inches (745 cc) engine has a cylinder bore of 3.07" (78 mm), piston stroke of 3.07" (78 mm), and rated power of 25 Hp (18.6 kW). This model is fitted with a belt-driven hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The John Deere X485 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering, electric PTO clutch, integral wet disc brakes, 18x8.50-8 front tyres, and 26x12.00-12 or 26x10.50-12 rear tyres. The operating weight is 845 lbs (383 kg). Compatible attachments for the tractor: 48", 54", or 62" mid-mount 3-blade mower deck with cutting height of 1.0-4.0" (25-102 mm), 46" front-mount single-stage snowblower with hydraulic lift, 54" front blade, and John Deere 45 front-end loader.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or difficult to start
No fuel in fuel tank - Add fuel
Incorrect fuel grade - Use quality fuel

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibration is excessive
Clogged or damaged mower drive sheave - Clean or replace sheave
Loose or damaged drive belt - Adjust belt tension or change the belt
Cutting blades are not balanced or warped - Change or balance blades
Blade mounting bolts are loose - Bolts should be tightened
Discharge chute regular clogging
Fast ground speed - Select a lower speed
Tall grass - Adjust mower to lower cutting height
Engine runs at low revs - Open choke fully

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery will not charge
Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Clean or tighten wiring connections

Battery bad cell - Battery change required
Starter cranks slow
Low battery output voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required
Battery does not hold charge - Service charging system or change battery
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals
Starter does not work
Battery is low or faulty - Recharge or change battery
Battery wiring is disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect wiring and connect as required
Low battery voltage - Recharge the battery
Improperly gapped or dirty spark plug - Clean, gap or change spark plug
Faulty solenoid or starter motor - Repair starter or install a new solenoid
