Craftsman LT1000 Troubleshooting

The Craftsman LT1000 lawn tractor was manufactured by AYP built between 2001 and 2004. The tractor can be equipped with the following models of gasoline engines: Briggs and Stratton 311707 Intek engine with a rated power of 19 hp (14.1 kW), Briggs and Stratton 31C707 engine with a rated power of 17.5 hp (13 kW), Kohler Command CV461 engine with a rated power of 16 hp (11.9 kW), or Kohler Command CV490 engine with a rated power of 17 hp (12.7 kW).

The lawn tractor is fitted with a three types of transmission. Type 1: Hydro-Gear 322-0510 belt-driven hydrostatic transmission. Type 2: 6-speed Dana D4360 belt-driven gear transmission. Type 3: 6-speed Peerless 206-545 belt-driven gear transmission. The maximum forward speed - 5.4 mph (8.7 km/h), maximum reverse speed - 2.7 mph (4.3 km/h).

The Craftsman LT1000 tractor is equipped with a manual steering, disc brakes, 15x6.00-6 front tires, and 18x9.50-8 rear tires. Compatible attachments for the tractor: a 42" mid-mount 2-blade mower deck with mechanical lift system, a 42" front blade, and 40" front-mount two-stage snow blower with a mechanical lift system.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine will not start or hard to start
Fuel tank is empty - Fill it up
Wrong fuel grade - Change fuel
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system
Spark plug wiring connection is damaged - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change
Spark plug is defective - Change spark plug as required
Fuel filter is clogged - Install new filter
Faulty safety switch - Change damaged switch
Carburetor is clogged - Clean the carburetor
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts
Worn or unadjusted choke cable - Change cable or adjust properly
Engine runs roughly
Plugged cooling fins - Wash or clean as required
Ignition failure - Inspect ignition system and change failed components
Faulty or stuck choke cable - Replace or service the cable
Air filter element is plugged - Replace or service air filter
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Check fuel pump and replace if necessary
Engine starts and immediately shuts off
Damaged spark plug - Spark plug need to be replaced
Clogged or faulty carburetor - Clean or change carburetor
Ignition coil is faulty - Change ignition coil as required
Worn or loose valve springs - Replace valve springs
Valves sticking - Clean the valves
Engine overheating
Engine oil level is insufficient - Need to add engine oil
Engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load
Cooling fins are blocked - Clean and wash as required
Too lean carburetor mixture - Make the correct settings
Wrong ignition timing - Ignition timing needs to be set properly
Improper valve setting - Adjust valves as required
Engine knocking or noise
Stale gasoline - Use proper fuel
Engine overload - Reduce load
Lack of engine oil - Check and refill engine oil
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust as required
Fuel pump is defective or dirty - Service or change fuel pump
Worn crankshaft or main bearings - Crankshaft or bearings need to be replaced
Valve clearance is improper - Adjust valve clearance
Piston rings or cylinder bore are damaged - Change faulty parts
Low engine power
Clogged or incorrectly adjusted carburetor - Carburetor needs to be adjusted correctly or cleaned
Air filter is dirty - Replace or clean air filter
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Service or change fuel pump
Ignition system is defective - Test ignition and replace failed parts
Cylinder head gasket is worn - Replace the head gasket
Burned or stuck valves - Replace or clean valves
Damaged or worn push rod - Install a new push rod
Faulty cylinder block parts - Replace defective components
High fuel consumption
Choke didn't open fully - Adjust or change choke cable
Carburetor main jet is improperly adjusted - Adjust main jet as required
Spark plug is defective or loose - Change or re-tighten spark plug
Valves are worn, stuck, or burned - Replace or service valves
Worn sleeve, piston, or rings - Replace faulty parts
Valve clearance is incorrect - Need to adjust valve clearance
Engine consuming too much oil
Seals or gaskets are defective - Install new components
Valve stems and guides are worn - Install new valves
Seized or wear piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced
Piston or cylinder liner is worn - Check piston and liner, change as required
Plugged breather pipe or hose - Clean or replace

Transmission Troubleshooting
Gear shift is hard
Gear shift linkage is damaged or loose - Replace or service the shift linkage
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Shift forks need to be changed
Defective gearshift mechanism - Replace defective components
Transmission noises
Insufficient transmission oil - Checking transmission oil level and add if necessary
Transmission fluid is dirty - Transmission fluid change required
Damaged bearings or gears - Replace bearings or gears
Transmission jumps out of gear
Shift lever is damaged or installed improperly - Reinstall the lever correctly or change it
Damaged or worn gear teeth - Replace defective gears
Faulty shift forks or shift rods - Change damaged forks or rods
Transmission slipping
Defective drive shaft/belt or incorrect drive shaft/belt adjustment - Adjust belt/shaft or install a new one
Incorrect clutch/brake adjustment or worn clutch/brake - Adjust or replace clutch/brake
Drive sheave is defective or worn - Replace sheave

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
Excessive HST transmission noise
Defective or not adjusted speed control pedal linkage - Adjust or install new linkage
Transmission overloaded - Load needs to be reduced
Contaminated transmission fluid or low fluid level - Pour fresh fluid or add transmission fluid to proper level
Worn or defective parts of the hydrostatic transmission - Change or repair defective parts
Difficult to shift
Worn or rusty shift linkage - Install new linkage
Hydrostatic pump is stuck or worn - Change or repair pump
Transmission shift control components are worn or unadjusted - Replace or adjust as required
Power is insufficient
Transmission oil insufficient - Check and refill the transmission oil
Worn or faulty drive pulley - Replace pulley
Shift linkage is damaged or unadjusted - Adjust correctly or replace linkage
Worn or unadjusted speed control linkage - Repair or adjust linkage
Transmission leaking
Worn transmission seals or gaskets - Install new gaskets or seals
Final drive shaft leakage - Replace shaft seals
Transmission case is cracked - Replace case or transmission assembly

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Mower vibration is excessive
Mower deck drive sheave is clogged or worn - Clean or change sheave
Drive belt is loose or defective - Adjust belt tension or replace belt
Unbalanced or warped mower blades - Balance blades or replace it
Loose blade mounting bolts - Tighten it fast
Discharge chute regular clogging
High ground speed - Need to slow down
Tall grass - Use a lower cutting height
Reduced engine rpm - Open choke fully
Cutting height is too low - Use a higher cutting height
Drive belt installation is not correct - Install drive belt correctly
Uncut grass when mowing
Deck clogged with grass clippings - Need to clean the mower deck
Not sharp blades - Blades need to be sharpened
Defective or worn blades - Blades must be changed
Fast mowing speed - Use a lower speed
Cutting level is too low - Use correct cutting height
Filled grass bag - Remove grass from bag
Blade scalped grass
Bumpy or not smooth lawn - Roll or level the lawn
Mower deck set to low cutting - Use a higher cutting height
Mowing speed is too high - Select a lower speed
Mower deck is not leveled properly - Adjust mower deck level properly
Damaged or bent blades - Replace the blades
Low tire pressure - Need to inflate tires
Uneven cut
Low tire inflation - Check and inflate the tires
Incorrect level of mower deck - Deck needs to be adjusted properly
Blades are excessively dull - Need a blade sharpening
Blades are worn or damaged - Change the blades
Clogged mower deck - Need to clean the mower deck
Broken mower deck shell - Repair or change the deck
Loose or faulty mower spindle - Install new spindle or repair it

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged
Loose or corroded cable connections - Service or tighten connections
Defective battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps need to be replaced
Battery dead cell - Battery replacement required
Starter motor cranks slow
Low battery voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required
Battery drains quickly - Service or change the battery
Disconnected wiring or bad battery terminals - Check cable connections and replace or service terminals
Starter motor won't turn
Battery is drained or defective - Replace or charge as required
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly
Low battery power - Battery needs to be recharged
Incorrectly gapped or worn spark plug - Replace or clean and gap
Damaged starter motor or solenoid - Starter/solenoid needs to be replaced
