Craftsman YS 4500 Troubleshooting

The Craftsman YS 4500 lawn tractor was manufactured from 2006 to 2008. The Craftsman YS4500 tractor is powered by Briggs and Stratton 331877 Intek single cylinder gasoline engine with a rated power of 21 Hp (15.3 kW), Briggs and Stratton 441777 V-twin cylinder gasoline engine with a rated power of 22 Hp (16.2 kW), Briggs and Stratton 31P977 single cylinder gasoline engine with a rated power of 20 Hp (14.9 kW), or Kohler Courage SV600 single cylinder gasoline engine with a rated power of 20 Hp (14.9 kW).

The Craftsman YS 4500 is fitted with three types of transmission. Type 1: Dana D6800 mechanical transmission with 6 forward and 1 reverse gears. Type 2: Tuff Torq K46 belt-driven hydrostatic transmission with foot-controlled variable speed drive. Type 3: Hydro Gear 351-0510 hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The maximum forward speed - 5.5 mph (8.8 km/h), max. reverse speed - 2.4 mph (3.9 km/h).

The Craftsman YS4500 was equipped with a sector and pinion type steering, disc brakes, 15x6.00-6 front tires, and 20x8.00-8 or 18x9.50-8 rear tires. The tractor is compatible with 42" or 46" mid-mount 2-blade mower decks with cutting height of 1.0-4.0 in (25-100 mm), six cut positions, and mechanical lifting system.

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine won't start or hard to start
No fuel in fuel tank - Fill it up
Wrong grade of gasoline - Change gasoline
Water or air in fuel system - Remove air or water from system
Spark plug wire is loose or disconnected - Check spark plug wiring connection, repair or change
Spark plug is damaged - Replace spark plug
Clogged fuel filter - Replace fuel filter
Brake pedal not pushed down - Push the brake pedal down
Carburetor problems - Carburetor diagnostics required
Low cylinder compression - Check cylinder block and replace worn parts
Damaged or incorrectly adjusted choke cable - Adjust properly or replace the cable
Irregular engine running
Clogged cooling fins - Need to wash or clean
Ignition system problems - Inspect ignition system and change failed components
Throttle cable is stuck or faulty - Replace or service the cable
Air filter element is clogged - Change or service air filter
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Service or change fuel pump
Engine starts and stops suddenly
Damaged spark plug - Change spark plug
Faulty or clogged carburetor - Service or replace carburetor
Ignition coil is damaged - Install a new ignition coil
Valve springs are worn or loose - Replace valve springs

Hydrostatic transmission noises
Worn or out of adjustment speed control linkage - Replace or adjust linkage
Transmission overloaded - Reduce the load is required
Insufficient oil level or contaminated oil - Change transmission oil or top up to proper level
Worn or defective transmission components - Check internal transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required
Shifting is hard
Shift linkage is rusty or worn - Lubricate or replace the linkage
Stuck or defective hydrostatic pump - Replace or repair pump
Misadjusted or faulty transmission shift control components - Replace or adjust as required
Power is insufficient
Transmission oil level is low - Add oil to the transmission housing
Drive pulley is defective or worn - Replace pulley
Broken or not adjusted shift linkage - Replace or adjust linkage
Speed control pedal linkage is bent or not adjusted - Adjust or change linkage
Transmission leakage

Mower Deck Troubleshooting
Excessive mower vibration
Damaged or clogged mower drive pulley - Replace or service pulley
Drive belt is defective or loose - Adjust belt tension or replace belt
Mower blades are bent or out of balance - Balance or change blades
Loose blade bolts tightening - Bolts need to be tightened
Discharge chute is constantly plugged
Ground speed is too fast - Select a slower speed
Tall grass - Must be set to low cutting height
Engine is running at too low speed - Adjust throttle to full opening

Excessive blade dullness - Blades need to be sharpened

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery won’t charge
Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Tighten or clean electrical wiring connections
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Install new terminal clamps
Battery dead cell - Replace the battery
Starter cranks slow
Low battery output - Low battery charging, charge as required
Battery discharges quickly - Battery needs to be serviced or replaced
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Check cables and service or change terminals
Starter motor is not working
Battery is drained or worn - Need to charge or replace the battery
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly
Low battery capacity - Recharge the battery
Spark plug worn or incorrectly gapped - Replace or clean and gap
Defective solenoid or starter motor - Repair starter or install a new solenoid
