Case IH 1255 XL Troubleshooting

The Case IH 1255 XL is a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive row crop tractor. This model was manufactured from 1985 to 1994. The Case IH 1255XL tractor is powered by International Harvester DT-358 six-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a maximum output power of 125 hp (93.2 kW) and 455.6 Nm (336 lb-ft) of peak torque at 1600 rpm.

The Case IH 1255 XL is fitted with two transmission options: 12x5 synchronized transmission and fully synchronized transmission with 20 forward and 9 reverse gears.

The maximum forward speed - 14.5 mph (23.3 km/h), maximum reverse speed - 13.6 mph (21.9 km/h). The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with fluid flow rate of 11 gpm (41.6 lpm). The hydraulic pressure is 172 bar (2500 psi). The 2WD models are equipped with 7.50x20 front tyres and 18.9R38 rear tyres. The 13.6R28 front tyres and 18.4R38 rear tyres fit 4WD tractors. The wheel base is 110.2 inches (2790 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine difficult to start or won't start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Replacement or repair required.

Diesel starts but stalls immediately

Clogged air filter element - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Dirty fuel filter - Clean the filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Repair or install a new fuel pump.

Diesel shuts off while driving

Coolant temperature is low - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Service the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Set it up as required.

Engine stalls when idling

Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Rebuild or change fuel pump.
Fuel injector fault - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is not correct - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.

Engine loses power

Air cleaner is dirty - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Adjust pressure to proper level.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Test and adjust.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder-head gasket is broken - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or defective - Replace piston rings.

Engine overheated

Low engine coolant - Fill the cooling system and check components for leaks or other faults.
Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Clogged radiator core or damaged radiator cap - Install new cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt slipping or worn - Change as required.
Diesel engine overloaded - Load reducing is recommended.

Oil pressure is low

Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Oil filter clogged - Change or service engine oil filter.
Oil grade or viscosity is wrong - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has incorrect oil clearance - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump is damaged - Install a new pump.

Abnormal engine knocking or noise

Lack of engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature - Warm up engine as required.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set up as recommended.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust the low idle speed.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Piston wear or scoring - Replace the pistons.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Insufficient transmission oil pressure

Low oil level - Check transmission oil level and add oil as required.
Transmission fluid filter element clogging (if equipped) - Service or replace the transmission fluid filter.
Stuck relief valve - Replace valve as required.

Transmission noises

Transmission fluid insufficient - Need to add transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid is contaminated - Transmission fluid change required.
Damaged gears or incorrect backlash - Adjust backlash properly or replace the gears.
Worn or damaged bearings - Replace the bearings.
Worn or damaged gear shift forks - Change defective shift forks.
Worn or damaged shaft splines - Change defective shaft.

Hard shifting

Worn or rusty gear shift linkage - Shift linkage need to be replaced.
Worn or damaged gear shift forks - Replace the shift forks.
Worn out parts of the gearshift mechanism - Replace worn parts.
Clutch is worn or not adjusted - Adjust or replace the clutch.

Transmission oil leakage

Too much oil in transmission - Drain the excess oil.
Damaged seals or gaskets - Replace worn gaskets or seal.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is low

Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Replace filter element or clean if required.
Faulty hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is set improperly - Set properly.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Leaks in hydraulic lines - Check the system and repair leaks.

Hydraulic system overheated

Faulty main relief valve - Replace relief valve.
Improper type of hydraulic oil - Use the proper type of oil.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding.

Hitch not raising or hitch raises slowly

Excessive hitch loading - The load should be reduced.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Fill up the hydraulic fluid.
Dirty hydraulic oil filter element - Change the hydraulic filter element or service if required.

Steering is stiff

Incorrectly installed or worn steering column - Install the steering column correctly or replace it.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Bleed air.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Tire pressure uneven - Inflate the tires correctly.
Steering pump malfunction - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Damaged or stuck steering pump control valve - Change or flush control valve.
Lack of steering oil - Fill the steering system with oil.

Excessive play in steering

Steering column coupling or shaft is worn - Change faulty component.
Faulty steering pump - Steering pump needs to be repaired or replaced.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Inspect and replace as required.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Loose or worn steering linkage components - Repair or change steering linkage.
Improperly adjusted or defective front wheel bearings - Adjust correctly or replace bearings.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge

Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Tighten or clean connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps.
Battery dead cell - Replace the battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter cranks slowly

Low battery voltage - Low battery charging, charge as required.
Battery will not hold charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Connect cables properly or replace terminals.

Starter motor won't turn

Battery is low or faulty - Charge or change the battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Faulty starter motor - Repair or change starter.
