Case IH 1394 Troubleshooting

The Case International 1394 is a 94-series utility tractor. This model was manufactured from 1985 to 1988. The Case IH 1394 tractor is equipped with Case AD4.55T 4-stroke four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 77 Hp (57.4 kilowatt) and 272 Nm (201 lb-ft) of max torque at 1400 rpm.

The Case IH 1394 is fitted with two transmission options: 12x4 synchromesh gear transmission, and Hydra-shift transmission with 12 forward and 4 reverse gears. The maximum forward speed - 28.9 mph (27.4 kph), maximum reverse speed - 7.5 mph (12 kph).

The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with fluid flow rate of 15.3 gpm (58 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 176 bar (2550 psi). The 2WD models are equipped with 7.50x16 front tyres and 13.6x36 rear tyres. The 12.4x24 front tyres and 16.9x30 rear tyres fit 4WD tractors. The wheelbase is 83" (2100 mm) for two-wheel drive models and 84.5" (2140 mm) for four-wheel drive models.

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine hard to start or doesn't start

Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel filter plugged - Replace the filter element.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjust to proper valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine starts but stalls immediately

Dirty air cleaner - Clean or replace element.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replace injection pump or repair it.

Engine stalls while running

Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Fuel filter element clogging - Filter maintenance required.
Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set up as recommended.

Engine stalls at idle

Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjust as required.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Repair or install new pump.
Clogged or defective injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Excessive valve clearance - Check and adjust as required.

Engine power is insufficient

Air filter element clogged - Clean or replace the element.
Clogged or burnt injection nozzle - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Repair or replace injection pump.
Improper valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjust low idle speed.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Cylinder-head gasket is leaking - Replace cylinder head gasket.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Install new piston rings.

Engine is overheated

Coolant level is low - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Engine oil insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Clogged radiator core or leaking radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Change the fan belt.
Engine is under excessive load - Reduce engine load.

Oil pressure too low

Lack of oil - Fill crankcase to proper oil level.
Oil filter clogged - Replace or service engine oil filter.
Improper type of engine oil - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Incorrect crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Bearing replacement required.
Defective oil pump - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine noise or knocking

Insufficient engine oil - Check and refill engine oil.
Engine is not fully warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Set up as recommended.
Incorrect low idle setting - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is not aligned or defective - Alignment procedure or replacement is required.
Worn or broken pistons - Replace the pistons.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Low transmission fluid pressure

Lack of transmission fluid - Need to add transmission fluid.
Dirty transmission oil filter element (if equipped) - Clean or replace the transmission filter.
Relief valve failure - Replace valve as required.

Transmission noise

Transmission oil insufficient - Add oil to the transmission housing.
Transmission fluid is dirty - Change the fluid.
Backlash is incorrect or gears are damaged - Adjust backlash correctly or replace the gears.
Worn or damaged bearings - Bearings replacement required.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Shift forks need to be replaced.
Damaged or worn shaft splines - Shaft need to be changed.

Gear shift is hard

Corroded or worn gear shift linkage - Lubricate or replace the shift linkage.
Worn or bent shift forks - Change the shift forks.
Defective parts in the gearshift mechanism - Replace defective parts.
Malfunction or incorrect clutch adjustment - Clutch replacement or adjustment required.

Transmission fluid leakage

Transmission fluid level is high - Correct the fluid level.
Worn seals or gaskets - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Hydraulic fluid pressure is insufficient

Low hydraulic oil level - Need to add oil.
Hydraulic oil filter is clogged - Replace filter element or clean if required.
Hydraulic pump failure - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Incorrect adjusted hydraulic control valve - Adjust correctly.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic piping is leaking - Check the system and repair leaks.

Excessive hydraulic system heat

Damaged main relief valve - Relief valve replacement required.
Hydraulic oil type is improper - Fill up with the proper type of oil.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.

Three-point hitch cannot be lifted or lifting is too slow

Hitch is under excessive load - Reduce the load is required.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Service the hydraulic filter or change if required.
Hydraulic pump failure - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve is defective - Replace relief valve.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Suction pipe is disconnected or broken - Connect or replace pipe.

Hitch won't drop or drops slowly

Hydraulic control valve is set improperly - The control valve must be set correctly.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.
Hitch is out of adjustment - Adjust as required.
Damaged hitch cross shaft - Change the shaft.

Hitch jerks when drop or lift

Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is defective - Install a new valve or repair it.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Stiff steering

Incorrectly fitted or worn steering column - Refit or replace the steering column.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Bleed air.
Incorrect toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Steering pump not working - Check the steering pump and replace if necessary.
Faulty or stuck pump flow control valve - Clean or install new control valve.
Steering fluid level is low - Check fluid level and add steering fluid as required.

Excessive steering wheel free play

Steering column shaft or coupling is worn out - Replace faulty part.
Faulty steering pump - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Check and replace as required.

Front wheels wander to left or right

Tires have uneven wear - Replace the tires.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Steering linkage assembly is worn or loose - Check and change as required.
Improperly adjusted or defective front hub bearings - Adjust correctly or install new bearings.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge

Corroded or loose wire connections - Service or tighten connections.
Defective electrical terminal connectors - Replace terminal connectors.
Battery faulty cell - Replace the battery.
Loose or worn belt - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter cranks slowly

Battery voltage is low - Battery needs to be recharged.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service battery or replace it.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check cables and service or change terminals.

Starter is not working

Battery is low or faulty - Charge or replace the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check cables and connect as needed.
Battery capacity is low - Recharge the battery.
Defective starter motor - Change or repair starter.
