Case IH 1455XL Troubleshooting

The Case IH 1455 XL is a 4-wheel drive row crop tractor. This model was manufactured between 1985 and 1996. The Case IH 1455 XL tractor is powered by International Harvester DT402 6-cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine with a max. output power of 145 hp (108.2 kW) and 529 Nm (391 lb-ft) of max torque at 1600 rpm.

The Case IH 1455 XL is fitted with 2 transmission options: fully synchronized transmission with 12 forward and 5 reverse gears, or 20x9 transmission with a high-low gear ranges.

The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 15.1 mph (24.3 km/h) and 15.2 mph (24.5 km/h). The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with flow of 11 gpm (41.5 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 2490 psi (171.5 bar). The tractor was equipped with 16.9R28 front tires and 20.8R38 rear tires. The wheelbase is 110.2 inches (2790 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Diesel hard to start or doesn't start

Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Fuel filter plugged - Filter maintenance required.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Valve clearance is not correct - Have it adjusted.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Engine starts and then shuts off

Clogged air cleaner - Clean or change the filter.
Fuel filter element clogging - Replace the filter element.
Fuel injection pump leakage - Check the fuel injection pump for leaks and fix it.
Fuel injector fault - Replace fuel injectors.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Rebuild or replace pump.

Engine stops running suddenly

Engine is not preheated - Warm up the engine.
Dirty fuel filter - Change the filter element.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Adjust as recommended.

Engine stops when idling

Low idle speed setting is not correct - Test and adjust.
Fuel injection pump failure - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Need to adjust valve clearance.

Engine power loss

Air cleaner is dirty - Replace air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check and replace nozzles if required.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct low idle settings.
Restricted fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Cylinder head gasket is worn - Replace the gasket as required.
Defective or worn piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine is overheated

Lack of coolant in cooling system - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Engine oil level low - Fill up the oil to required level.
Faulty radiator cap or dirty radiator fins - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - The fan belt needs to be replaced.
Engine overload - Load reducing required.

Oil pressure is low

Engine oil insufficient - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Dirty oil filter element - Change or service engine oil filter.
Oil grade or viscosity is wrong - Use the specified type of engine oil.
Crankshaft bearing has incorrect oil clearance - Change bearings.
Oil pump is defective - Repair or change.

Engine knocks or noises

Not enough engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up the engine.
Improper fuel injection timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Normalize low idle speed.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Connecting rod misalignment or failure - Need to align or replace the connecting rod.
Pistons are worn or scored - Have pistons replaced.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Insufficient transmission oil pressure

Insufficient transmission fluid - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Clogged transmission fluid filter (if equipped) - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Relief valve is damaged - Change relief valve.

Excessive transmission noise

Insufficient transmission fluid - Need to add transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid is dirty - Fill up with fresh transmission fluid.
Improper backlash or worn gears - Replace gears or adjust backlash correctly.
Bearings are damaged or worn - Replace the bearings.
Worn or bent shift forks - Replace the shift forks.
Worn or damaged shaft splines - Change defective shaft.

Hard shifting

Corroded or worn gear shift linkage - Replace or lubricate the shift linkage.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Change the shift forks.
Gearshift mechanism malfunction - Identify and replace failed parts.
Clutch is out of adjustment or defective - Adjust or replace the clutch.

Transmission fluid leaks

Transmission fluid level is exceeded - Excess fluid must be drained.
Seals or gaskets are worn - Install new gaskets or seal.

Hydraulic spool valve block is not adjusted properly - The spool valve should be properly adjusted.

Hydraulic system overheated

Main relief valve is defective - Change relief valve.
Incorrect hydraulic oil type - Use the correct type of hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Change the oil.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.

3-point hitch can't lift or lifts too slowly

Heavy load on the hitch - Reduce loading.
Hydraulic fluid is insufficient - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Change the hydraulic filter element or service if required.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Install a new hydraulic oil pump.
Damaged main relief valve - Replace relief valve.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Replace or repair the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Suction line is loose or broken - Replace or repair.

Hitch fails to drop or drops slowly

Incorrect adjusted hydraulic control valve - Adjust correctly.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Misadjusted hitch - Need to make adjustments.
Lift arm shaft is damaged - Change the shaft.

Jerky lowering or lifting of the hitch

Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Defective hydraulic pump - Install a new hydraulic oil pump.
Hydraulic spool valve block is faulty - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.

Steering Troubleshooting
Steering wheel turns hard

Damaged or incorrectly assembled steering column - Replace steering column or assemble correctly.
Air in the hydraulic steering system - Bleed air.
Not adjusted toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Faulty steering pump - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Steering pump control valve is worn or stuck - Service or replace flow control valve.
Lack of steering fluid - Need to add steering oil.

Excessive play in steering

Steering column coupling or shaft has maximum wear - Change faulty component.
Steering pump is faulty - Replace or repair steering pump.
Worn or loose steering linkage joints - Inspect and change as required.

Tractor is pulling to right or left

Uneven tyre pressure - Inflate the tyres properly.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Worn or loose steering linkage joints - Repair or replace steering linkage.
Front wheel bearings are defective or improperly adjusted - Replace the bearings or adjust it properly.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge

Wiring connections are loose or corroded - Service or tighten cable connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are defective - Change terminal connectors.
Battery faulty cell - Battery replacement required.
Belt is worn or loose - Replace belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter cranks slow

Low battery output voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery won’t hold charge - Service or replace the battery.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Check cables and service or change terminals.

Starter is not cranking

Battery is low or faulty - Change or recharge battery.
Wiring harness is disconnected or improperly connected - Check wiring harness and connect as required.
Low battery output voltage - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is defective - Starter should be changed.
