Case IH 7120 Magnum Troubleshooting

The Case IH 7120 is a Magnum series row-crop tractor. This model was manufactured from 1987 to 1993. Case IH 7120 tractor is powered by Case-International 6T-830 6-cylinder 12-valve turbocharged diesel engine with a maximum power of 183 hp (135,6 kW) at 2200 rev/min.

This model fitted with 2 transmission options: 18x2 full powershift transmission, or 24x3 powershift with creeper transmission. Max. forward speed - 18,3 mph (29,4 kph), maximum reverse speed - 2,9 mph (4,7 kph).

The closed center hydraulic system includes a piston pump with rated capacity of 22 gpm (83,3 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 180 bar (2600 psi). The front tire size is 11.00x16 (2WD) or 13.6R28 (4WD). The rear tire size is 18.4R38. The Case IH 7120 Magnum 4WD weight is 15920 lbs (7220 kg).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Diesel engine hard to start or doesn't start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Change the filter element.
Faulty or dirty injection nozzles - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Have it adjusted.
Fuel injection pump is not working correctly - Change pump or rebuild it.

Diesel starts but stalls suddenly

Dirty air filter element - Service or replace the air filter.
Fuel filter plugged - Replace filter element.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Replacement or repair required.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation

Engine is not preheated - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Change filter element.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.

Engine stalls while idling

Too low idle RPM - Normalize low idle speed.
Defective fuel injection pump - Rebuild or replace pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Incorrect valve clearance - Check and adjust as required.

Low engine power

Intake air restriction - Change air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Adjust to proper pressure.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance according to specifications.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct low idle adjustment.
Dirty fuel lines or hoses - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Change cylinder head gasket.
Leaking or damaged piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine is overheated

Engine has a lack of coolant - Add coolant fluid to cooling system and also check it for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Defective radiator cap or clogged radiator fins - Replace cap or clean radiator.
Loose or defective fan belt - The fan belt needs to be replaced.
Diesel engine overloaded - Reduce the load or use a lower gear.

Insufficient oil pressure

Low crankcase oil level - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Plugged engine oil filter - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Oil grade or viscosity is incorrect - Use the specified type of engine oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump malfunction - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Insufficient engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up the engine.
Timing of fuel injection pump is incorrect - Adjust as recommended.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjust the low idle speed.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Align or replace connecting rod.
Scored or worn pistons - Replace the pistons as required.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Low transmission oil pressure

Transmission fluid insufficient - Checking transmission fluid level and add if necessary.
Transmission fluid filter element is clogged (if equipped) - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Stuck relief valve - Install a new valve.

Transmission noises

Low fluid level - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Transmission fluid contamination - Change the fluid.
Incorrect backlash or gears are worn - Replace gears or adjust backlash correctly.
Worn or damaged bearings - Faulty bearings should be changed.
Shift forks are worn or bent - Shift forks need to be replaced.
Worn or stuck shaft splines - Change the shaft.

Gears are hard to shift

Gear shift linkage is worn or rusty - Change or lubricate shift linkage.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Replace defective shift forks.
Worn parts of the gear shifting mechanism - Change worn parts.
Clutch is faulty or misadjusted - Adjust or install new clutch.

Transmission fluid leakage

High transmission oil level - Correct the oil level.
Broken seals or gaskets - Install new components.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Low hydraulic fluid pressure

Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Replace filter element or clean if required.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve is out of adjustment - Need to make adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.
Leaks in hydraulic pipes - Identify leaks in the system and repair it.

Hydraulic system overheats

Damaged main relief valve - Relief valve need to be replaced.
Hydraulic oil type is improper - Fill up with the proper type of oil.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Air in hydraulic pipes - Bleed hydraulic pipes.

3-point hitch cannot be raised or raising is too slowly

Excessive load on hitch - Reduce hitch load.
Insufficient hydraulic oil - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Clean or replace the hydraulic filter.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Main relief valve malfunction - Relief valve must be changed.
Hydraulic control valve is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Suction pipe is disconnected or broken - Connect or replace pipe.

Hitch cannot be dropped or dropping is too slow

Hydraulic control valve is out of adjustment - Need to make adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
The three-point hitch is not adjusted - Adjust three-point hitch as required.
Damaged lift arm shaft - Install a new shaft.

Hitch drop or lift is jerky

Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Hydraulic pump is defective - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is defective - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.

Steering Troubleshooting
Hard Steering

Improperly assembled or defective steering column - Reassemble or change the steering column.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Need to bleed air.
Not adjusted toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Front tires are worn unevenly - Install new tires.
Steering pump is worn - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Stuck or faulty steering pump control valve - Install a new flow control valve or clean it.
Steering fluid insufficient - Check and refill steering fluid.

Steering wheel has too much free-play

Worn steering column coupling or shaft - Change defective part.
Steering pump is worn - Repair or change steering pump.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Repair or replace steering linkage.

Tractor pulls to right or left

Uneven tyre pressure - Inflate the tyres properly.
Improper toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Steering linkage assembly is worn or loose - Inspect and replace as required.
Improperly adjusted or defective front hub bearings - Install new bearings or adjust it correctly.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Corroded or loose electrical wire connections - Service or tighten cable connections.
Battery terminal clamps are defective - Terminal clamps should be changed.
Worn-out battery - Battery change required.
Loose or damaged belt - Need to adjust belt tension or replace belt.

Starter turns slow

Low battery power - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery drains quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Check wiring and clean or replace terminals.

Starter will not crank

Battery is low or faulty - Charge or replace the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Damaged starter motor - Starter should be replaced.
