Mahindra 1538 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra 1538 is a four-wheel drive compact utility tractor from 1500 series. This model was manufactured from 2016 to 2018. The Mahindra 1538 tractor is powered by 166.7 cu.in (2.7 L) Mahindra CE-38 four-cycle four-cylinder direct injection diesel engine with a rated power of 38.7 hp (29 kW). The Mahindra 1538 is fitted with a two transmission options: synchro shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears, or 3-range hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 14.9 mph (23 km/h) and 12.2 mph (19.5 km/h). The open center hydraulic system has a gear pump with a rated capacity of 7.7 gpm (29 lpm).

The tractors are equipped with 7.00x16 (AG) or 27x10.5-15 (Turf) front tires and 11.2x24 (AG) or 41x14-20 (Turf) rear tires. The wheelbase is 77 inches (1955 mm). Compatible attachments for the tractor: Mahindra 1538L front end loader with a maximum lift height at pivot pin of 99" (2510 mm), and Mahindra 1538B backhoe with a maximum digging depth of 94" (2380 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine difficult to start or won't start

Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Install a new kit of correctly balanced nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Excessive valve clearance - Have it adjusted.
Fuel injection pump damage - Replace or repair injection pump.

Diesel starts but immediately stops

Clogged air filter element - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Fuel filter plugging - Clean or change the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective fuel injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Fuel injection pump is broken - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.

Engine shuts off suddenly during operation

Engine is not preheated - Warm up to required temperature.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean or change the filter.
Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Test injection nozzles and change if necessary.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stalls at idle

Low idle speed setting is not correct - Adjustment required.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Repair or install new pump.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust.

Engine power is reduced

Intake air restriction - Replace air filter element.
Clogged injection nozzle - If necessary, replace with a new nozzle.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Dirty fuel lines or hoses - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Change cylinder head gasket.
Leaking or defective piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine is overheated

Low engine coolant - Add coolant and check the components of cooling system.
Low engine oil level - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Damaged radiator cap or dirty radiator core - Clean radiator or change cap.
Broken or loose fan belt - Replace the fan belt.
Engine is overloaded - Load reducing required.

Oil pressure too low

Low crankcase oil level - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Oil filter element is dirty - Change or service engine oil filter.
Incorrect engine oil Use the specified type of engine oil.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is incorrect - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Defective oil pump - Repair or replace.

Engine knocking sound or abnormal noise

Not enough engine oil - Fill up the oil to required level.
Low coolant temperature - Warm up the engine.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Adjust according to specifications.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Adjust low idle speed.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Test and replace fuel injectors if necessary.
Connecting rod is worn or misaligned - Need to align or replace the connecting rod.
Broken or worn pistons - Pistons need to be replaced.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Lack of transmission oil pressure

Low oil level - Need to add transmission oil.
Clogged transmission fluid filter (if equipped) - Service or change transmission fluid filter.
Stuck relief valve - Replace valve as required.

Transmission noise

Transmission oil insufficient - Fill the transmission housing with oil.
Transmission fluid is contaminated - Fill up with fresh transmission fluid.
Defective gears or improper backlash - Adjust backlash correctly or replace the gears.
Worn or damaged bearings - Change faulty bearings.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Shift forks need to be replaced.
Worn or damaged shaft splines - Shaft need to be changed.

Hard shifts

Gear shift linkage is corroded or worn - Install new shift linkage.
Worn or bent shift forks - Replace defective shift forks.
Gear shifting mechanism is defective - Defective parts must be replaced.
Worn or unadjusted clutch - Clutch replacement or adjustment required.

External oil leaks

High transmission fluid level - Drain the excess fluid.
Seals or gaskets are worn - Seals and gaskets replacement required.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission noises

Dirty transmission fluid or insufficient fluid level - Pour fresh fluid or add transmission fluid to proper level.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Replace or adjust linkage.
Relief valve malfunction - Change the valve.
Transmission overload - Reduce the load is required.
Transmission components are damaged or worn - Replace or repair defective components.

Loss of power

Low fluid level - Check and refill the transmission fluid.
Relief valve failure - Install a new relief valve.
Worn or out of adjustment speed control linkage - Adjust or repair linkage.

Transmission fluid overheats

Transmission fluid insufficient - Check and refill the transmission fluid.
Dirty transmission fluid filter - Clean or change transmission fluid filter.
Cooling components are damaged or clogged - Inspect all cooling components and replace or clean if necessary.
Excessive transmission load - Reduce loading.

Transmission oil leaking

Damaged gaskets or seals - Change defective seal or gaskets.
High internal transmission housing pressure - Check transmission parts for damage or wear and replace if required.
Oil drain line is clogged - Clean or change the line.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Low hydraulic fluid pressure

Hydraulic oil level low - Checking hydraulic oil level and add if necessary.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Replace hydraulic filter element or service if necessary.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Hydraulic spool valve block is not adjusted properly - The spool valve should be properly adjusted.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Leaks in hydraulic lines - Inspect hydraulic system for leaks and repair it.

Hydraulic system overheated

Main relief valve malfunctioning - Relief valve must be changed.
Hydraulic fluid type is improper - The proper type of fluid must be used.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding.

Hitch not lifting or hitch lifts slowly

Excessive loading on the hitch - Reduce the load is required.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic fluid level.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element - Replace filter element or clean if required.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Install a new hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve is damaged - Install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic spool valve is defective - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction line - Tighten the pipe or replace it.

Three-point hitch cannot be dropped or dropping is too slow

Incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Use the correct adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
The 3-point hitch is not adjusted - Adjust 3-point hitch as required.
Worn hitch cross shaft - Replace the shaft.

Hitch lifting or lowering is jerky

Air in the hydraulic system - Air bleeding.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Hydraulic oil change required.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic spool valve is defective - Repair or change the valve.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Steering is difficult

Incorrectly mounted or defective steering column - Mount the steering column correctly or replace it.
Air in the hydraulic steering system - Need to bleed air.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Steering pump malfunction - Install a new steering pump.
Pump flow control valve is stuck or worn - Replace or service control valve.
Insufficient steering oil - Need to add steering oil.

Excessive play in steering

Steering column shaft or coupling is worn out - Replace defective component.
Worn steering pump - Install a new steering pump.
Loose or worn steering linkage components - Check and replace as required.

Tractor pulls to left or right

Uneven tire pressure - Inflate the tires properly.
Improper toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Steering linkage parts are loose or worn - Check and replace as required.
Front wheel bearings are damaged or incorrectly adjusted - Replace the bearings or adjust it properly.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Service or tighten connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps should be changed.
Battery is worn - Battery replacement required.
Worn or loose belt - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter motor cranks slow

Low battery capacity - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery is draining quickly - Service charging system or replace battery.
Corroded battery terminals or disconnected wires - Connect cables properly or replace terminals.

Starter doesn't crank

Battery is discharged or worn - Replace or charge as required.
Battery wiring is disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect wiring and connect as required.
Low battery output - Battery needs to be recharged.
Starter motor failure - Replace or repair starter.
