Mahindra 1640 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra 1640 is a 4-wheel drive compact utility tractor from 1600 series. This model was manufactured from 2018 to 2023. The Mahindra 1640 tractor is powered by 166.7 cu.in (2.7 L) Mahindra CE-38 4-cycle 4-cylinder direct injection diesel engine with a rated power of 38.7 hp (29 kW). The Mahindra 1640 is fitted with a two transmission options: synchro shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears, or 3-range hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears. The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 14.9 mph (23.8 km/h) and 12.2 mph (19.5 km/h).

The open center hydraulic system has a gear pump with a rated capacity of 7.7 gpm (29 lpm). The tractors are equipped with 7.00x16 (AG) or 27x10.5-15 (Turf) front tires and 11.2x24 (AG) or 41x14-20 (Turf) rear tires. The wheelbase is 77 inches (1955 mm). Compatible attachments for the tractor: 72" mid-mount side discharge 3-blade Mahindra 1672M mower deck with cutting height of 1.0-4.0 in (25-102 mm), Mahindra 1640L front loader with maximum lift height of 99" (25100 mm), and Mahindra 55B backhoe with maximum digging depth of 95" (2410 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts up hard or won't start

Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Clogged fuel filter - Change the filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Clean or replace injection nozzles.
Water or dirt in fuel system - Drain, flush, and service the system.
Improper valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Repair or install new pump.

Engine starts but immediately stalls

Air filter is clogged - Change air filter element.
Fuel filter element is dirty - Install new filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Fuel injector fault - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump failure - Rebuild or replace pump.

Diesel shuts off while driving

Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Fuel filter plugged - Clean or change the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Dirty or damaged injection nozzles - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust as recommended.

Engine stalls while idle

Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Replacement or repair required.
Fuel injector fault - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is not correct - Check and adjust.

Engine power is reduced

Air filter plugged - Replace air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are clogged or faulty - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Repair or replace injection pump.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Adjust low idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Service fuel hoses and lines.
Defective cylinder head gasket - Cylinder-head gasket replacement required.
Defective or worn piston rings - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheating

Engine has a lack of coolant - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Radiator fins are dirty or radiator cap is defective - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Loose or defective fan belt - Belt change is required.
Engine is running overloaded - Change to lower gear or reduce load.

Oil pressure is low

Low crankcase oil level - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Oil filter clogging - Service or change engine oil filter element.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use proper viscosity oil.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Replace bearings.
Defective oil pump - Remove and inspect oil pump.

Engine noises or knocks

Insufficient engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod failure or misalignment - Connecting rod needs to be aligned or changed.
Piston wear or scoring - Replace the pistons as required.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Insufficient transmission oil pressure

Insufficient transmission fluid - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Clogged transmission fluid filter (if equipped) - Replace or service transmission fluid filter.
Relief valve malfunction - Install a new relief valve.

Transmission noise

Low oil level - Check transmission oil level and add oil as required.
Transmission fluid is contaminated - Transmission fluid change required.
Gears are damaged or backlash is incorrect - Change the gears or set backlash properly.
Bearings are cracked or worn - Change faulty bearings.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Change defective shift forks.
Worn or stuck shaft splines - Install a new shaft.

Hard shifting

Rusty or worn gear shift linkage - Change or lubricate shift linkage.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Install new shift forks.
Worn out parts of the gearshift mechanism - Replace worn parts.
Worn or unadjusted clutch - Adjust or change the clutch.

Transmission oil leaks

Too much fluid in transmission - Excess fluid must be drained.
Damaged gaskets or seals - Install new components.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
Excessive hydrostatic transmission noise

Transmission oil is contaminated or oil level is insufficient - Add oil to proper level or pour fresh transmission oil.
Defective or not adjusted speed control pedal linkage - Replace or adjust linkage.
Relief valve failure - Change the valve.
Excessive loading - Reduce transmission load.
Worn or defective parts of the hydrostatic transmission - After disassembly and inspection, replace defective components.

Lack of power

Insufficient transmission oil - Check transmission oil level and add oil as required.
Defective relief valve - Replace valve as required.
Worn or unadjusted speed control linkage - Repair or adjust linkage.

Transmission oil over heats

Low fluid level - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Transmission fluid filter element is clogged - Service or replace the transmission fluid filter.
Cooling components are clogged or damaged - Check all cooling components and clean or replace if required.
Excessive loading - Reduce loading.

Transmission oil leaks

Seals or gaskets are worn - Install new components.
Internal transmission housing pressure is too high - Repair or replace damaged components.
Clogged oil drain line - Clean or replace drain line.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Hydraulic fluid pressure is insufficient

Insufficient hydraulic oil - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic fluid filter element is clogged - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Incorrect adjusted hydraulic spool valve - Adjust the spool valve correctly.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Leaks in hydraulic pipes - Inspect hydraulic system for leaks and repair it.

Hydraulics overheating

Main relief valve is faulty - Replace relief valve.
Incorrect type of hydraulic fluid - Use the correct type of fluid.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.

3-point hitch cannot be raised or raising is too slowly

Excessive hitch loading - The load should be reduced.
Low hydraulic oil level - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Hydraulic oil filter element is clogged - Change the hydraulic filter element or service if required.
Faulty hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve is faulty - Relief valve need to be replaced.
Hydraulic spool valve block is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Suction pipe is loose or broken - Repair or replace pipe.

Hitch won't drop or drops slowly

Incorrect adjusted hydraulic spool valve - Adjust the spool valve correctly.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.
Unadjusted hitch - Need to make adjustments.
Worn lift arm shaft - Replace the shaft.

Hitch lowering or lifting is jerky

Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.
Contaminated hydraulic oil - Change hydraulic oil.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is damaged - Repair or change the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Repair or install a new hydraulic cylinder.

Steering Troubleshooting
Steering is stiff

Incorrectly assembled or damaged steering column - Reassemble the steering column correctly or change it.
Air in the hydraulic steering system - Air-bleed steering system.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Uneven tire pressure - Inflate the tires properly.
Steering pump not working - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Stuck or worn pump flow control valve - Clean or install new control valve.
Steering oil level low - Add oil to steering system.

Steering wheel free play is excessive

Worn steering column shaft or coupling - Change defective part.
Steering pump failure - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Steering linkage assembly is worn or loose - Repair or replace steering linkage.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Tires have uneven wear - Replace the tires.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Repair or replace steering linkage.
Worn or incorrectly adjusted or worn front wheel bearings - Adjust correctly or change bearings.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery does not charge

Electrical cable connections are loose or corroded - Clean or tighten connections.
Faulty battery terminal clamps - Terminal clamps should be changed.
Defective battery - Replace the battery.
Belt is loose or defective - Belt needs to be adjusted or changed.

Starter cranks slowly

Battery voltage is low - Charge the battery.
Battery is draining quickly - Service or change the battery.
Bad terminals or disconnected battery cables - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter is not working

Battery is discharged or worn - Charge or replace the battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or improperly connected - Inspect cables and connect properly.
Battery power is low - Charge the battery.
Starter motor is damaged - Repair or change starter.
