Mahindra 3616 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra 3616 is a 4WD (4x4) compact utility tractor from 16 Series. This model was manufactured by Mitsubishi built from 2011 to 2021. The Mahindra 3616 tractor is powered by 101.4 cu.in (1.7 L) Mitsubishi S3L3L vertical 3-cylinder indirect injection naturally aspirated diesel engine with a rated power of 36 hp (27 kW). The Mahindra 3616 is fitted with a two transmission options: synchronized shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears, or hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 14.8 mph (23.8 km/h) and 10.7 mph (17.2 km/h). The open center hydraulic system has a gear pump with a rated capacity of 7.7 gpm (29 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 152 bar (2205 psi). The tractors are equipped with 7.00x16 front tires and 11.2x24 rear tires. The wheelbase is 69" (1750 mm). Compatible attachments for the ROPS models: Mahindra ML115 front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 99" (2510 mm). Compatible attachments for the Cab models: Mahindra ML116 front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 99" (2510 mm), and Mahindra 3720 backhoe with maximum digging depth of 94" (2380 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine hard to start or doesn't start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Clogged fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Faulty fuel injection nozzles - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Adjustment procedure required.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Replace or rebuild injection pump.

Diesel starts but then stops

Dirty air filter element - Air filter maintenance required.
Dirty fuel filter - Service or replace the filter.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective fuel injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Repair or install new pump.

Engine shuts off while running

Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter plugged - Filter maintenance required.
Air in the fuel lines - Bleed the fuel lines.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Set the fuel pump timing correctly.

Engine stalls while idling

Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Normalize low idle speed.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Replace or repair injection pump.
Defective fuel injectors - Replace or clean fuel injectors.
Valve clearance is out of adjustment - Need to adjust valve clearance.

Engine power is too low

Air filter is dirty - Clean air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Fuel injection pressure is wrong - Repair or replace injection pump.
Incorrect valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Low idle speed adjustment is incorrect - Adjust low idling as recommended.
Clogged fuel hoses or lines - Clean fuel hoses and lines.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Change cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Install new piston rings.

Engine overheating

Coolant level is low - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Low engine oil level - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Clogged radiator core or damaged radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Broken or loose fan belt - Change the fan belt.
Diesel engine is overloaded - Reduce the load or operate the tractor in lower gears.

Oil pressure is insufficient

Insufficient engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Dirty oil filter - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Incorrect engine oil Use proper viscosity oil.
Incorrect oil clearance in main bearing - Bearing needs to be changed.
Defective oil pump - Inspect and change as required.

Engine noises or knocks

Low engine oil level - Need to add engine oil.
Coolant temperature is low - Warm up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.
Low idle speed set incorrectly - Correct the settings.
Dirty or defective injectors - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Connecting rod is defective or misaligned - Align or replace connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Replace the pistons as required.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Insufficient transmission fluid pressure

Transmission oil insufficient - Fill up the transmission oil.
Transmission oil filter is dirty (if equipped) - Service or change transmission oil filter.
Relief valve failure - Replace valve as required.

Excessive transmission noise

Transmission fluid insufficient - Check and refill the transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid contamination - Transmission fluid change required.
Damaged gears or incorrect backlash - Change the gears or set backlash properly.
Worn or cracked bearings - Change the bearings.
Damaged or worn gear shift forks - Install new shift forks.
Damaged or worn shaft splines - Install a new shaft.

Hard shifting

Stuck or worn gear shift linkage - Replace or lubricate the shift linkage.
Worn or bent gear shift forks - Change the shift forks.
Defective parts in the gearshift mechanism - Replace defective parts.
Clutch is worn or not adjusted - Clutch replacement or adjustment required.

Transmission fluid leakage

Too much oil in transmission - Drain the excess oil.
Worn seals or gaskets - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission is excessively noisy

Insufficient oil level or contaminated oil - Add oil to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh oil.
Bent or unadjusted speed control pedal linkage - Adjust or change linkage.
Relief valve failure - Install a new valve.
Transmission overloaded - Load needs to be reduced.
Transmission parts are worm or defective - After disassembling and inspection, change defective components.

Lack of power

Low oil level - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level.
Relief valve malfunction - Install a new valve.
Defective or not adjusted speed control pedal linkage - Adjust or replace linkage.

Transmission fluid overheats

Insufficient transmission oil - Fill up the transmission oil.
Transmission oil filter element clogging - Service or replace the transmission oil filter.
Defective or plugged cooling components - Check all cooling components and change or clean if required.
Excessive transmission load - Reduce loading.

Transmission fluid leakage

Damaged gaskets or seals - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.
Transmission case internal pressure is too high - Change defective parts.
Plugged transmission fluid return tube - Service or replace return tube.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is low

Hydraulic oil is insufficient - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Change the hydraulic filter element or service if required.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly - Set the spool valve properly.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Leaking hydraulic pipes - Identify leaks in the system and repair it.

Hydraulic system overheated

Main relief valve is damaged - Replace relief valve.
Wrong hydraulic fluid type - Pour the proper type of fluid.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.

Hitch won't raise or raises slowly

Excessive load on hitch - Reduce the load is required.
Hydraulic fluid level low - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Change hydraulic filter element or clean if necessary.
Hydraulic pump failure - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Main relief valve failure - Replace relief valve.
Defective hydraulic control valve - Install a new valve or repair it.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction pipe - Retighten or replace pipe.

3-point hitch can't drop or drops too slowly

Hydraulic spool valve is not set properly - Set the spool valve properly.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Unadjusted hitch - Adjust 3-point hitch as required.
Worn hitch rock shaft - Install a new shaft.

Hitch lifting or lowering is jerky

There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Install a new hydraulic oil pump.
Defective hydraulic spool valve - Repair or replace hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Steering wheel is very heavy to turn

Worn or incorrectly fitted steering column - Replace the steering column or refit it correctly.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Bleed air from system.
Incorrect toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Front tyres are worn unevenly - Install new tyres.
Hydraulic steering pump is defective - Steering pump needs to be replaced or repaired.
Steering pump control valve is stuck or faulty - Replace or service control valve.
Not enough steering oil - Check oil level and add steering oil as required.

Excessive play in steering

Steering column coupling or shaft has maximum wear - Change faulty component.
Steering pump stopped working - Install a new hydraulic steering pump.
Loose or worn steering linkage parts - Check and replace as required.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Tyre pressure is uneven - Adjust the tyre pressure.
Incorrect toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Check and replace as required.
Improperly adjusted or defective front wheel bearings - Replace or adjust the bearings correctly.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery won’t charge

Electrical wire connections are corroded or loose - Clean or tighten wiring connections.
Defective battery terminal clamps - Replace terminal clamps.
Battery faulty cell - Battery change required.
Loose or worn belt - Belt needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Starter motor turns slow

Low battery power - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery won’t hold charge - Battery needs service or replacement.
Disconnected cables or faulty battery terminals - Check cable connections and change or clean terminals.

Starter is not cranking

Battery is discharged or defective - Recharge or change battery.
Wiring is improperly connected or disconnected - Check wiring and connect properly.
Low battery output - Recharge the battery.
Starter motor failure - Replace or repair starter.
