Mahindra 5545 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra 5545 is a four-wheel drive utility tractor from 5500 Series. This model was manufactured from 2015 to 2023. The components of Mahindra 5545 powerline system: a 161.7 cubic inches (2.65 L) four-cycle three-cylinder common rail direct injection naturally aspirated liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 43 Hp (32 kW), and synchro shuttle transmission with 8 forward and 8 reverse gears. The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 19.8 mph (31.9 km/h) and 19.1 mph (30.8 km/h).

The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with rated fluid flow of 10.9 gal/min (43.2 l/min). The Mahindra 5545 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering system, hydraulic wet disc brakes, 9.50x20 front tyres, and 13.6x28 rear tyres. The wheelbase is 85 inches (2160 mm). The tractor is compatible with Mahindra 5545L front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 120" (3040 mm), and Mahindra 75B backhoe with maximum digging depth of 116" (2940 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Dirty fuel filter - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Service or change injection nozzles.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
Valve clearance is wrong - Adjustment procedure required.
Faulty fuel injection pump - Change or repair the pump.

Engine starts and immediately shuts off

Clogged air filter element - Replace air filter element.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Install new filter element.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Clogged or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Install a new pump or rebuild.

Engine stalls while running

Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel filter plugging - Replace the filter element.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Clogged or defective injection nozzles - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stalls when idling

Too low idle RPM - Correct the settings.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Replace or rebuild injection pump.
Fuel injector fault - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
The valve clearance is not adjusted - Correct valve clearance needs to be set.

Loss of engine power

Intake air restriction - Replace air filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles fault - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Insufficient fuel injection pressure - Correct the pressure settings.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjust valve clearance.
Too low idle RPM - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Service fuel lines and hoses.
Damaged cylinder-head gasket - Gasket should be replaced.
Piston rings are damaged or leaking - Change piston rings.

Engine is overheated

Coolant level is low - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Clogged radiator core or damaged radiator cap - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Excessive wear of the fan belt - Belt change is required.
Engine is running overloaded - Reduce load or shift to lower gear.

Low oil pressure

Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the engine oil.
Oil filter element clogged - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use oil of correct viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing has excessive oil clearance - Bearings need to be reinstalled.
Oil pump failure - Replace as required.

Engine noise or knocking

Low engine oil level - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine is cold - Engine is not warmed up to the required temperature.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Adjust the pump as required.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Clogged or defective injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Connecting rod is misaligned or defective - Need to change or align the connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Replace the pistons.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Transmission fluid pressure is insufficient

Insufficient transmission oil - Fill the transmission housing to proper oil level.
Clogged transmission oil filter element (if fitted) - Service or replace the transmission oil filter.
Relief valve is damaged - Install a new valve.

Transmission is making noise

Transmission fluid level is low - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Transmission fluid contamination - Change the fluid.
Worn gears or incorrect backlash - Adjust backlash properly or replace the gears.
Worn or broken bearings - Bearings need to be changed.
Damaged or worn gear shift forks - Replace defective shift forks.
Worn or damaged shaft splines - Change defective shaft.

Gear hard to shift

Rusty or worn gear shift linkage - Shift linkage need to be replaced.
Worn or bent shift forks - Replace defective shift forks.
Gear shifting mechanism is defective - Defective parts must be replaced.
Worn or unadjusted clutch - Clutch needs to be replaced or adjusted.

Transmission fluid leaking

Transmission oil level is high - Correct the oil volume.
Worn seals or gaskets - Seals and gaskets need to be replaced.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is insufficient

Hydraulic fluid level low - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter - Clean the hydraulic filter or install new filter element.
Hydraulic pump failure - Change or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve is out of adjustment - Need to make adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Leaking hydraulic lines - Check the hydraulic system and fix leaks.

Excessive hydraulic system heat

Main relief valve is damaged - Relief valve replacement required.
Improper hydraulic oil type - The proper type of hydraulic oil must be used.
Hydraulic oil contamination - Change the oil.
Air in hydraulic pipes - Bleed hydraulic pipes.

Hitch won't raise or raises slowly

Hitch is under excessive load - Reduce loading.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element - Change hydraulic filter element or clean if necessary.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Repair or replace hydraulic oil pump.
Faulty main relief valve - Change relief valve.
Hydraulic spool valve is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic valve.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Suction pipe is loose or broken - Repair or replace pipe.

Hitch cannot be lowered or lowering is too slowly

Hydraulic spool valve block is not adjusted properly - The spool valve should be properly adjusted.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
The 3-point hitch is not adjusted - Need to make adjustments.
Damaged lift arm shaft - Install a new shaft.

Hitch lower or lift is jerky

Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.
Dirty hydraulic oil - The oil must be changed.
Hydraulic pump not working - Install a new hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic spool valve block is faulty - Install a new valve or repair it.
Broken hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.

Steering Troubleshooting
Difficult steering

Worn or incorrectly fitted steering column - Replace the steering column or refit it correctly.
Air trapped inside steering system - Need to bleed air.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Uneven wear on front tyres - Replace the tyres.
Damaged hydraulic steering pump - Repair or change steering pump.
Damaged or stuck steering pump control valve - Install a new flow control valve or clean it.
Steering oil insufficient - Check and refill steering oil.

Excessive play in steering

Steering column coupling or shaft is extremely worn out - Change faulty part.
Steering pump malfunction - Check the steering pump and replace if necessary.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Inspect and change as required.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Front tires are worn unevenly - Install new tires.
Incorrect toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Loose or worn steering linkage parts - Check and change as required.
Incorrectly adjusted or damaged front wheel bearings - Change or adjust the bearings properly.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery won’t charge

Corroded or loose wire connections - Tighten or clean connections.
Defective battery terminal connectors - Terminal connectors should be replaced.
Battery bad cell - Battery change required.
Loose or worn belt - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter turns slow

Low battery capacity - Recharge the battery.
Battery is draining quickly - Service battery or replace it.
Wires are disconnected or battery terminals are corroded - Connect wiring correctly or install new terminals.

Starter is not working

Battery is drained or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Battery wires are disconnected or incorrectly connected - Check wires and connect correctly.
Low battery output - Recharge the battery.
Starter motor is damaged - Change or repair starter.
