Mahindra 5555 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra 5555 utility tractor was manufactured between 2015 and 2023. The Mahindra 5555 driveline consists of 4-cycle 3-cylinder direct injection turbocharged intercooled diesel engine and 8x8 synchro shuttle transmission. A 161.7 cubic inches (2.7 L) engine has a cylinder bore of 3.78" (96 mm), piston stroke of 4.80" (122 mm), and rated power of 55 Hp (41 kW). The maximum forward speed - 19.8 mph (31.9 km/h), maximum reverse speed - 19.1 mph (30.8 km/h).

The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with rated fluid flow of 10.6 gpm (40.2 lpm). The Mahindra 5555 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering system, wet disc brakes, 7.50x16 (2WD) or 9.50x24 (4WD) front tyres, and 14.9x28 rear tyres. The wheelbase is 85.2" (2165 mm). The tractor is compatible with Mahindra 5565L front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 128" (3250 mm), and Mahindra 75B backhoe with maximum digging depth of 116" (2940 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Fuel filter element clogging - Change the filter element.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Incorrect valve clearance - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Install a new fuel pump or repair.

Engine starts but stalls suddenly

Air filter element clogged - Replace air filter element.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Install new filter element.
Fuel injection pump leakage - Check the fuel injection pump for leaks and fix it.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Defective fuel injection pump - Rebuild or replace pump.

Engine stops suddenly during operation

Engine not warmed up - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter element clogging - Clean the filter or install new filter element.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Check injection nozzles and replace if required.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust the pump as required.

Engine stalling at idle

Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel injection pump is faulty - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Fuel injector fault - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Valve clearance is wrong - Correct valve clearance.

Diesel engine is losing power

Dirty air filter element - Clean air cleaner element.
Clogged injection nozzle - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Uneven fuel injection pressure - Check the fuel injection pressure and adjust if necessary.
Valve clearance is wrong - Check and adjust as required.
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses clogging - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Cylinder head gasket defective - Change cylinder head gasket.
Piston rings are leaking or defective - Replace the piston rings as required.

Engine overheating

Insufficient coolant - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Lack of engine oil - Add oil to the engine crankcase.
Dirty radiator fins or defective radiator cap - Clean radiator or install new cap.
Fan belt is broken or worn - Belt replacement is recommended.
Engine overloaded - Load reducing required.

Oil pressure is insufficient

Engine oil insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Plugged engine oil filter - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Incorrect oil viscosity - Fill up with the correct oil viscosity.
Crankshaft bearing oil clearance is excessive - Install new bearings.
Oil pump is defective - Inspect and change as required.

Engine noise or knocking

Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is cold - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Improper setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.
Incorrect low idle setting - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel injector fault - Change or clean fuel injectors.
Faulty or misaligned connecting rod - Replace or align connecting rod.
Pistons are scored or worn - Pistons need to be replaced.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Transmission fluid pressure is insufficient

Transmission fluid insufficient - Need to add transmission fluid.
Clogged transmission fluid filter (if equipped) - Service or change transmission fluid filter.
Defective relief valve - Install a new valve.

Transmission noises

Lack of transmission fluid - Need to add transmission fluid.
Transmission oil is contaminated - Transmission oil change required.
Gears are defective or backlash is improper - Install new gears and set backlash correctly.
Worn or broken bearings - Bearings replacement required.
Shift forks are worn or bent - Replace the shift forks.
Shaft splines are worn or damaged - Shaft need to be changed.

Hard to shift gears

Rusty or worn gear shift linkage - Lubricate or replace the shift linkage.
Shift forks are worn or bent - Shift forks need to be replaced.
Defective parts in the gearshift mechanism - Replace defective parts.
Worn or unadjusted clutch - Clutch adjustment or replacement required.

Transmission oil leakage

Transmission oil level is exceeded - Correct the oil volume.
Seals or gaskets are worn - Replace worn gaskets or seal.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Insufficient hydraulic fluid pressure

Hydraulic fluid level low - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter - Install a new hydraulic filter element.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Incorrect adjusted hydraulic spool valve - Adjust the spool valve correctly.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic piping is leaking - Inspect hydraulic system for leaks and repair it.

Hydraulic system overheating

Defective main relief valve - Relief valve replacement required.
Wrong type of hydraulic fluid - Fill up with the correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil is dirty - Hydraulic oil change required.
Air trapped in hydraulic system - Bleed air from system.

Hitch does not raise or raises very slowly

Heavy load on the hitch - Reduce loading.
Low hydraulic fluid level - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Hydraulic fluid filter element is clogged - Change the hydraulic filter element or service if required.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Main relief valve is defective - Relief valve need to be replaced.
Faulty hydraulic spool valve - Repair or replace the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is faulty - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Suction pipe is loose or broken - Repair or replace pipe.

Hitch fails to drop or drops slowly

Incorrect adjusted hydraulic spool valve - Adjust the spool valve correctly.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
The 3-point hitch is not adjusted - Adjust three-point hitch as required.
Hitch rock shaft is worn Change the shaft.

Hitch lift or lower is jerky

There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Repair or replace hydraulic fluid pump.
Damaged hydraulic control valve - Repair or replace the valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.

Steering Troubleshooting
Steering wheel turns hard

Improperly fitted or damaged steering column - Refit or change the steering column.
Air in steering system - Need to bleed air.
Not adjusted toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Front tires are worn unevenly - Install new tires.
Steering pump not working - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Steering pump control valve is worn or stuck - Change or flush control valve.
Steering fluid level is low - Check fluid level and add steering fluid as required.

Steering wheel has too much free-play

Worn steering column coupling or shaft - Replace faulty part.
Steering pump is faulty - Repair or replace steering pump.
Loose or worn steering linkage components - Replace or repair steering linkage.

Tractor is pulling to left or right

Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Not adjusted toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Steering linkage joints are worn or loose - Inspect and change as required.
Improperly adjusted or defective front hub bearings - Adjust properly or replace bearings.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery is not charging

Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Service or tighten connections.
Electrical terminal connectors are faulty - Replace terminal connectors.
Defective battery - Battery change required.
Belt is loose or defective - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter cranks slow

Low battery output voltage - Charge the battery.
Battery discharges quickly - Service charging system or install new battery.
Bad battery terminals or disconnected wiring - Check wiring and clean or replace terminals.

Starter motor won't turn

Battery is discharged or defective - Change or recharge battery.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Defective starter motor - Repair or install a new starter.
