Mahindra Max 24 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra Max 24 is a 4-wheel drive compact utility tractor. This model was manufactured from 2014 to 2019. The components of Mahindra Max 24 powerline system: a 80.4 cubic inches (1.3 L) Mitsubishi S3L2 four-cycle three-cylinder indirect injection naturally aspirated liquid-cooled diesel engine with a rated power of 24.5 Hp (18.3 kW), and hydrostatic transmission with infinite forward and reverse gears.

The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 9.6 mph (15.5 km/h) and 5 mph (8 km/h). The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with rated fluid flow of 4.6 gal/min (17.5 l/min). The Mahindra Max 24 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering system, wet disc brakes, 20x8.00-10 front tyres, and 29x12.5-15 rear tyres. The tractor is compatible with Mahindra Max 24L front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 75" (1900 mm), and Mahindra Max 24B backhoe with maximum digging depth of 80" (2030 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine difficult to start or doesn't start

Air trapped in fuel system - Bleed air.
Clogged fuel filter - Service the filter.
Fuel injection nozzles are faulty or clogged - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Incorrect valve clearance - Correct valve clearance.
Fuel injection pump malfunctioning - Rebuild or replace pump.

Engine starts but stalls immediately

Air filter is dirty - Clean or replace element.
Clogged fuel filter - Change the filter element.
Fuel injection pump has loose connections - Tighten the connections.
Defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Fuel injection pump malfunction - Repair or install new pump.

Engine stops unexpectedly during operation

Coolant temperature is low - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Service the filter.
There is air in the fuel system - Bleed the system.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Use the correct fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stops at idle

Wrong adjustment of low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Defective fuel injectors - Inspect fuel injectors and change as required.
Excessive valve clearance - Adjust to proper valve clearance.

Engine lacks power

Air filter is clogged - Install new air filter element.
Dirty or faulty injection nozzles - Clean or change injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Test fuel injection pressure and adjust it correctly.
Valve out of adjustment - Check and adjust as required.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Adjustment required.
Fuel hoses or lines are clogged - Fuel lines and hoses need to be cleaned.
Cylinder-head gasket is leaking - Install a new gasket.
Damaged or leaking piston rings - Piston rings replacement required.

Engine overheating

Coolant level is low - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Engine oil level is insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Clogged radiator fins or damaged radiator cap - Change cap or clean radiator.
Fan belt is worn or faulty - Fan belt must be replaced.
Engine overload - Reduce load or shift to lower gear.

Oil pressure is insufficient

Engine oil insufficient - Checking oil level and add if necessary.
Oil filter is clogged - Clean or change engine oil filter.
Wrong oil viscosity - Drain and refill with oil of correct grade and viscosity.
Incorrect oil clearance in crankshaft bearing - Change bearings.
Oil pump malfunction - Repair or change.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Engine oil level low - Need to add engine oil.
Coolant temperature is low - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Fuel injection pump timing is wrong - Adjust according to specifications.
Incorrect low idle speed adjustment - Correct low idle settings.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Connecting rod is not aligned or worn - Need to align or replace the connecting rod.
Scored or worn pistons - Pistons replacement required.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission noise

Fluid is contaminated or fluid level is insufficient - Fill to required level or change the fluid.
Speed control pedal linkage is damaged or out of adjustment - Adjust or install new linkage.
Stuck relief valve - Install a new relief valve.
Transmission overload - The load should be reduced.
Damaged or worn components of hydrostatic transmission - Replace or repair defective components.

Power is too low

Lack of transmission fluid - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Defective relief valve - Replace relief valve as required.
Speed control pedal linkage is damaged or out of adjustment - Adjust or replace linkage.

Transmission fluid overheating

Transmission oil insufficient - Add oil to the transmission housing.
Clogged transmission fluid filter - Service or replace the transmission fluid filter.
Cooling components are damaged or clogged - Inspect all cooling components and replace or clean if necessary.
Transmission overloaded - Reduce loading.

Transmission oil leakage

Seals or gaskets are broken - Install new components.
High internal transmission case pressure - Change defective parts.
Plugged transmission fluid return tube - Service or replace return tube.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Hydraulic oil pressure is insufficient

Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Clogged hydraulic fluid filter element - Change hydraulic filter element or clean if necessary.
Damaged hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is set improperly - Set properly.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Leaking hydraulic lines - Find leaks in the system and fix it.

Hydraulic system is overheated

Main relief valve failure - Change relief valve.
Wrong type of hydraulic fluid - Fill up with the correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.

3-point hitch won't lift or lifts slowly

Excessive load on hitch - Load needs to be reduced.
Hydraulic oil level low - Fill the system to proper hydraulic oil level.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element - Hydraulic filter maintenance required.
Hydraulic pump not working - Repair or replace hydraulic fluid pump.
Damaged main relief valve - Relief valve must be changed.
Hydraulic spool valve is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
Disconnected or broken suction pipe - Connect or change pipe.

Hitch cannot be dropped or dropping is too slow

Hydraulic control valve is out of adjustment - Need to make adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder not working - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
The hitch is not adjusted - Adjust the 3-point hitch.
Worn hitch cross shaft - Change the shaft.

Hitch lower or lift is jerky

Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.
Contaminated hydraulic fluid - Change hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Repair or replace hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic spool valve block is defective - Repair or change the valve.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.

Steering Troubleshooting
Hard Steering

Defective or incorrectly mounted steering column - Change steering column or mount correctly.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Bleed air from system.
Improper toe-in - Check toe-in and correct.
Tire pressure is uneven - Adjust the tire pressure.
Faulty steering pump - Replace or repair steering pump.
Stuck or damaged steering pump control valve - Clean or replace control valve.
Steering fluid level low - Checking steering fluid level and add it if necessary.

Excessive steering wheel free play

Steering column shaft or coupling is worn out - Change defective component.
Damaged hydraulic steering pump - Check the steering pump and replace if necessary.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Change or repair steering linkage.

Tractor pulls to left or right

Tire pressure is uneven - Adjust the tire pressure.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Steering linkage assembly is worn or loose - Replace or repair steering linkage.
Front wheel bearings are defective or improperly adjusted - Adjust correctly or install new bearings.

Electrical Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Loose or corroded electrical wiring connections - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal connectors are defective - Terminal connectors should be replaced.
Battery faulty cell - Replace the battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter motor cranks slow

Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, charge it.
Battery is draining quickly - Service or replace the battery.
Corroded battery terminals or disconnected wires - Connect wires correctly or change terminals.

Starter motor won't turn

Battery is low or faulty - Need to charge or replace the battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Battery capacity is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Faulty starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
