Mahindra Max 25 Troubleshooting

The Mahindra Max 25 sub-compact utility tractor was manufactured between 2012 and 2014. The Mahindra Max 25 driveline consists of Mitsubishi S3L2 3-cylinder indirect injection water-cooled diesel engine and 2-range hydrostatic transmission. A 80.4 cubic inches (1.3L) engine has a cylinder bore of 3.07" (78 mm), piston stroke of 3.62" (92 mm), and rated power of 25 Hp (18.6 kW). The maximum forward speed - 9.6 mph (15.5 km/h), maximum reverse speed - 5 mph (8 km/h).

The open center hydraulic system includes a gear pump with rated fluid flow of 17.5 gpm (17.5 lpm). The Mahindra Max 25 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering system, wet disc brakes, 6.00x12 front tyres, and 9.50x16 rear tyres. The wheelbase is 58 inches (1470 mm). The tractor is compatible with a 56" front-mount two-stage Mahindra MXSB-56 snowblower, 62" front blade Mahindra MXBL-62, Mahindra ML202 front end-loader with a maximum lift height of 75" (1900 mm), and Mahindra MB60A backhoe with maximum digging depth of 80" (2030 mm).

Diesel Engine Troubleshooting
Engine starts hard or doesn't start

Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel filter plugging - Replace filter element.
Defective injection nozzle - Inspect nozzles and replace if necessary.
Dirt or water in fuel system - Drain water or flush dirt from the system.
The valve clearance is incorrect - Check and adjust as required.
Defective fuel injection pump - Install a new fuel pump or repair.

Engine starts but then stalls

Air filter clogged - Service air cleaner.
Clogged fuel filter - Change the filter element.
Fuel injection pump leakage - Check the fuel injection pump for leaks and fix it.
Clogged or defective injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Fuel injection pump is defective - Rebuild or change fuel pump.

Engine stops running suddenly

Engine has not warmed up to the recommended temperature - Warm up to required temperature.
Dirty fuel filter - Service the filter.
Air in the fuel system - Air bleeding.
Defective injection nozzle - Replace injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pump timing is not adjusted - Check the fuel injection pump timing adjustment.

Engine stops when idling

Low idle speed set incorrectly - Need to adjust idle speed.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Install a new fuel pump or repair.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean fuel injectors or change it.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Reduced engine power

Plugged air cleaner - Carry out maintenance on air filter.
Faulty fuel injection nozzles - Change fuel injection nozzles.
Incorrect fuel injection pressure - Adjust to proper pressure.
Valve clearance is not correct - Adjust valve clearance.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Normalize low idle speed.
Fuel lines or hoses are dirty - Fuel hoses and lines must be clean.
Leaking cylinder head gasket - Install new cylinder head gasket.
Damaged or leaking piston rings - Replace piston rings.

Engine overheated

Not enough coolant - Fill radiator to proper level and check components for faults.
Engine oil level low - Fill up the engine oil.
Radiator core is clogged or radiator cap is leaking - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Fan belt is broken or worn - Replace the fan belt.
Engine overloaded - Reduce load on the engine.

Oil pressure too low

Not enough oil in the engine - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Engine oil filter is plugged - Service or replace engine oil filter.
Wrong oil viscosity - Use proper viscosity oil.
Excessive oil clearance of crankshaft bearing - Bearing replacement required.
Oil pump failure - Inspect and change as required.

Engine noise or knocking

Engine oil insufficient - Fill up the oil to required level.
Engine is cold - Normalize the temperature by warming up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust as recommended.
Low idle speed setting is incorrect - Adjust as required.
Dirty or defective injectors - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Misaligned or defective connecting rod Connecting rod must be aligned or replaced.
Pistons are scored or worn - Replace the pistons as required.

Hydrostatic Transmission Troubleshooting
HST transmission makes noise

Transmission fluid is dirty or fluid level is too low - Add fluid to the correct level or fill the transmission with fresh fluid.
Speed control linkage is worn or unadjusted - Change or adjust linkage.
Relief valve is stuck - Replace valve as required.
Excessive loading - Reduce transmission load.
Defective or worn transmission parts - Change or repair defective parts.

Low power

Transmission fluid insufficient - Fill the transmission housing to proper fluid level.
Stuck relief valve - Replace valve as required.
Speed control linkage is defective or unadjusted - Replace or adjust linkage.

Hot transmission oil

Transmission oil insufficient - Fill the transmission housing with oil.
Transmission oil filter is clogged - Clean or change transmission oil filter.
Cooling components are defective or plugged - Check all cooling components and change or repair if required.
Transmission overload - Reduce transmission load.

Transmission fluid leakage

Seals or gaskets are worn - Install new seal or gaskets.
High internal transmission housing pressure - Check hydrostatic transmission components for defect or damage and change if necessary.
Clogged transmission fluid return pipe - Clean or change return pipe.

Hydraulic System Troubleshooting
Insufficient hydraulic fluid pressure

Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Clogged hydraulic oil filter element - Clean or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Hydraulic control valve block is not set properly - Use the proper setting.
Hydraulic cylinder is broken - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Leaks in hydraulic pipes - Check the system and repair leaks.

Hydraulics overheating

Defective main relief valve - Relief valve must be changed.
Hydraulic fluid type is wrong - Use correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Dirty hydraulic fluid - The fluid must be changed.
Air in hydraulic lines - Bleed hydraulic lines.

Hitch not lifting or hitch lifts slowly

Excessive loading on the hitch - Load needs to be reduced.
Hydraulic oil level low - Check and refill the hydraulic oil.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Service or replace the hydraulic filter.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Main relief valve is defective - Change relief valve.
Damaged hydraulic spool valve - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction line - Tighten the pipe or replace it.

Three-point hitch cannot be dropped or dropping is too slow

Incorrect setting hydraulic control valve - Use the correct adjustment.
Hydraulic cylinder failure - Repair or change hydraulic cylinder.
The hitch is not adjusted - Adjustment is required.
Lift arm shaft is worn - Change the shaft.

Hitch lift or lower is jerky

Air in hydraulic pipes - Bleed hydraulic pipes.
Hydraulic fluid is dirty - Hydraulic fluid change required.
Hydraulic pump malfunction - Change or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Faulty hydraulic control valve - Install a new hydraulic valve or repair it.
Damaged hydraulic cylinder - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.

Steering Troubleshooting
Steering wheel is difficult to turn

Damaged or incorrectly assembled steering column - Replace steering column or assemble correctly.
Air lock in hydraulic steering system - Air-bleed steering system.
Incorrect toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Uneven tyre pressure - Inflate the tyres properly.
Steering pump is worn - Install a new steering pump.
Steering pump control valve is worn or stuck - Clean or install new control valve.
Low steering oil level - Fill up the steering oil.

Excessive steering wheel free play

Steering column shaft or coupling is worn out - Replace defective component.
Steering pump malfunction - Repair or change steering pump.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Repair or change steering linkage.

Front wheels wander to right or left

Front tyres wear unevenly - Change the tyres.
Improper toe-in - Adjust toe-in wheels.
Worn or loose steering linkage assembly - Inspect and replace as required.
Incorrectly adjusted or worn front wheel bearings - Adjust correctly or replace bearings.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Corroded or loose cable connections - Service or tighten connections.
Faulty battery terminal connectors - Replace terminal connectors.
Battery is worn - Battery change required.
Belt is defective or loose - Install a new belt or adjust belt tension.

Starter motor cranks slow

Low battery voltage - Battery needs to be recharged.
Battery is not holding charge - Service charging system or change battery.
Battery cables are disconnected or terminals are faulty - Connect cables correctly or replace terminals.

Starter will not crank

Battery is drained or worn - Battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
Disconnected or improperly connected wiring harness - Inspect battery wiring harness and connect as required.
Battery power is low - Recharge the battery.
Faulty starter motor - Change or repair starter.
