Case IH 2394 Troubleshooting

The Case IH 2394 is a two-wheel drive row-crop tractor. This model was manufactured from 1984 to 1988. The tractor is powered by 504 cu.in (8.3 L) Case 504BD 4-stroke 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a rated power of 197 hp (147 kW).

The Case IH 2394 is fitted with a two transmission options: power shift transmission with 12 forward and 3 reverse gears, or power shift transmission with 24 forward and 3 reverse gears. The maximum travel speed (forward/reverse): 19.3 mph (31.1 km/h) and 6.5 mph (10.5 km/h).

The closed center hydraulic system has a piston pump with a rated capacity of 27 gpm (102.3 lpm). The hydraulic system pressure is 155 bar (2250 psi). The Case IH 2394 is equipped with a hydrostatic power steering, hydraulic wet disc brakes, 11.00x16 or 14Lx16 front tyres, and 24.5x32 or 30.5x32 rear tyres The wheelbase is 118" (2990 mm).

Engine Troubleshooting
Engine hard to start or won't start

Air in fuel system - Bleed fuel system.
Clogged fuel filter - Clean the filter element.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Replace injection nozzles.
Water in the fuel system - Change fuel and repair fuel system.
Valve out of adjustment - Adjust valve clearance.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Repair or change injection pump.

Engine starts but then stops

Clogged air filter - Clean or replace element.
Fuel filter element is clogged - Filter maintenance required.
Problems with fuel injection pump tightness - Inspect fuel injection pump for leaks.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Damaged fuel injection pump - Repair or install new pump.

Engine shuts off while running

Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Fuel filter plugging - Service the filter.
Air in fuel tank - Bleed fuel tank.
Fuel injection nozzles are dirty or defective - Replace injection nozzles.
Incorrect adjustment of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust fuel injection pump as required.

Engine stops when idle

Incorrect low idle setting - Test and adjust.
Fuel injection pump is not operating properly - Rebuild or install a new injection pump.
Fuel injectors are dirty or defective - Clean or replace fuel injectors.
Incorrect valve clearance - Adjustment procedure required.

Diesel power loss

Air filter element clogged - Clean air cleaner element.
Fuel injection nozzles are damaged - Service or change injection nozzles.
Fuel injection pressure is incorrect - Adjust to proper pressure.
Valve clearance is not correct - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Incorrectly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle settings.
Clogged fuel lines or hoses - Clean fuel lines and hoses.
Worn cylinder head gasket - Install a new gasket.
Piston rings are worn or damaged - Piston rings need to be replaced.

Engine overheating

Lack of engine coolant - Refill to the correct level and inspect system for leaks.
Insufficient engine oil - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Radiator fins are dirty or radiator cap is defective - Clean radiator or change cap.
Loose or damaged fan belt - Replace as required.
Engine is overloaded - Reduce engine load.

Low oil pressure

Low crankcase oil level - Check oil level and add oil as required.
Oil filter element clogged - Change or clean engine oil filter element.
Different type of engine oil - Use proper viscosity oil.
Incorrect crankshaft bearing oil clearance - Change bearings.
Worn oil pump - Repair or change.

Engine knocks or noises

Not enough engine oil - Fill up the engine oil.
Engine is cold - Warm up the engine.
Wrong setting of fuel injection pump timing - Adjust the pump as required.
Improperly adjusted low idle speed - Correct low idle adjustment.
Damaged or clogged injectors - Replace fuel injectors.
Misaligned or faulty connecting rod - Connecting rod needs to be replaced or aligned.
Pistons are worn or scored - Pistons replacement required.

Transmission Troubleshooting
Lack of transmission oil pressure

Transmission fluid insufficient - Need to add transmission fluid.
Transmission oil filter element clogging (if equipped) - Service or replace the transmission oil filter.
Stuck relief valve - Replace the valve.

Transmission noise

Insufficient transmission fluid - Add fluid to the transmission housing.
Transmission oil contamination - Transmission oil change required.
Gears are defective or backlash is improper - Adjust backlash properly or replace the gears.
Worn or broken bearings - Bearings need to be changed.
Shift forks are bent or worn out - Change the shift forks.
Stuck or worn shaft splines - Replace defective shaft.

Hard shifts

Gear shift linkage is rusty or worn - Lubricate or replace shift linkage.
Shift forks are worn or bent - Change defective shift forks.
Worn out parts of the gearshift mechanism - Replace worn parts.
Clutch is out of adjustment or defective - Adjust clutch or change if necessary.

Transmission fluid leaks

Transmission fluid level is high - Correct the fluid level.
Worn seals or gaskets - Gaskets or seal need to be replaced.

Hydraulics Troubleshooting
Low hydraulic system pressure

Hydraulic fluid level low - Checking hydraulic fluid level and add if necessary.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter element - Clean or replace the hydraulic filter.
Defective hydraulic pump - Replace or repair hydraulic fluid pump.
Incorrect setting hydraulic control valve block - Set correctly.
Hydraulic cylinder malfunction - Install a new hydraulic cylinder or repair it.
Leaks in hydraulic pipes - Find leaks in the system and fix it.

Hydraulics overheating

Main relief valve malfunction - Install a new relief valve.
Hydraulic fluid type is wrong - Use correct type of hydraulic fluid.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
There is air in the hydraulic system - Bleed hydraulic system.

Hitch won't raise or raises slowly

Hitch is under excessive load - Reduce loading.
Insufficient hydraulic fluid - Add fluid as required.
Dirty hydraulic fluid filter - Install a new hydraulic filter element.
Faulty hydraulic pump - Change or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Main relief valve malfunction - Relief valve need to be replaced.
Hydraulic control valve block is faulty - Install a new valve or repair it.
Defective hydraulic cylinder - Replace or repair hydraulic cylinder.
Loose or broken suction pipe - Retighten or replace pipe.

Hitch cannot be dropped or dropping is too slow

Hydraulic control valve block is not set properly - Use the proper setting.
Hydraulic cylinder is defective - Change or repair hydraulic cylinder.
The three-point hitch is not adjusted - Adjustment is required.
Hitch cross shaft is worn - Install a new shaft.

Hitch lift or drop is jerky

Air in hydraulic system - Bleed air from hydraulic system.
Hydraulic oil is contaminated - Fill up with fresh hydraulic oil.
Hydraulic pump is faulty - Change or repair hydraulic oil pump.
Hydraulic spool valve is faulty - Repair or change hydraulic valve.
Faulty hydraulic cylinder - Repair or replace hydraulic cylinder.

Steering System Troubleshooting
Excessive effort to steer

Incorrectly mounted or defective steering column - Mount the steering column correctly or replace it.
Air lock in the steering system - Bleed the system of air.
Incorrect toe-in - Adjust toe-in properly.
Tires have uneven wear - Replace the tires.
Worn steering pump - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Worn or stuck pump flow control valve - Replace or clean flow control valve.
Steering oil level is insufficient - Checking steering oil level and add it if necessary.

Excessive steering wheel free play

Steering column shaft or coupling is worn out - Change faulty component.
Steering pump is faulty - Check the hydraulic steering pump and change if necessary.
Loose or worn steering linkage parts - Check and replace as required.

Front wheels wander to left or right

Uneven tyre pressure - Inflate the tyres properly.
Improper toe-in - Check and adjust toe-in.
Steering linkage components are loose or worn - Check and replace as required.
Incorrectly adjusted or worn front wheel bearings - Adjust properly or change bearings.

Electrical System Troubleshooting
Battery cannot be charged

Wiring connections are corroded or loose - Tighten or service cable connections.
Battery terminal clamps are faulty - Change terminal clamps.
Battery dead cell - Change the battery.
Belt is worn or loose - Adjust belt tension or change the belt.

Starter turning slow

Low battery voltage - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Battery is draining quickly - Service charging system or install new battery.
Disconnected wires or corroded battery terminals - Connect cables properly or replace terminals.

Starter motor won't turn

Battery is drained or defective - Charge or change the battery.
Wiring is incorrectly connected or disconnected - Inspect wiring and connect correctly.
Battery power is low - Battery is drained, recharge it.
Faulty starter motor - Replace or repair starter.
